Experience classic Chinese texts in a completely new way in a performance of specially composed modern musical interpretations of the two classic Chinese texts San Zi Jing (Three Character Classic) and Di Zi Gui (Standards for being a Good Student and Child), which have traditionally been used to educate the young on moral values and ethics.
Conducted by Maestro Tsung Yeh, this concert features original music written by famous Chinese composer Xu Jian Qiang, melodious voices of the Victoria Junior College Choir and children from the Hong Wen School and Nanyang Primary School, as well as vocalist Yu Ji Xing. Professor Qian Wen Zhong, with narration, interesting anecdotes and stories by established MediaCorp artiste Guo Liang.

The Bukit Batok Chinese Orchestra (BBCO) is the first all-female community centre Chinese Orchestra in Singapore. Established in 1994 the BBCO, which has become the pride and joy of Bukit Batok Community Club, has already performed its unique pop and Western-style music to audiences in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

While it has won accolades abroad, BBCO is equally popular in Singapore, especially to residents of Bukit Batok and the west.  The group staged its inaugural concert at BBCC to welcome the spring festival, which attracted record numbers of more than 300 people, and plans to broaden its audience base with a new repertoire of music and styles in 2012.

In conjunction with Lorong Khoo Chye Sheng Hong Temple’s annual Spring Celebrations, Sheng Hong Arts Institute joins Taipei Arts University’s Traditional Music Faculty to present three nights of Nanyin exuberance. Nanyin made it to the United Nations World Heritage List in 2009 as a heritage art form. The art form originated from Wenzhou, China and is now recognized worldwide. Taipei Arts University being located in Taiwan, an important inheritance location would bring much depth and unique feel to the fusion of Nanyin and other Chinese traditonal music for these performances.

Yew Tee Community Club Chinese Orchestra (YTCCCO) was established in 2003, and came under the auspices of the former Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC, Yeo Cheow Tong.  It started with 20 youth musicians but soon grew to 60 young music talents. Under the baton of Wong Chee Kong, the group has been a familiar sight at numerous community events in Yew Tee and beyond. Its annual community concerts and public concerts have been well received.
In December 2005, the YTCCCO reached greater heights when it launched its quarterly recital series, with the aim of training and preparing soloists for bigger concerts. In June 2008, the Orchestra performed at schools in Taiping, Perak and Georgetown, Penang. It soon launched its Saturday Afternoon Delights in 2009 in which Yew Tee residents enjoyed a 15-minutes solo or small ensemble performances at the Yew Tee Community Club. The Orchestra has since adopted the Dover Park Hospice and made time to celebrate the Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival for its patients, families, and volunteers.

The Swan Ensemble is a young and experimental ruan ensemble established in 2011. Under the music directions of Mr. Jim Tan, it strives to offer a contemporary perspective to the art of ruan performing in this modernized society. Audiences will be enthralled by a series of repertoires that include themes from Disney songs, anime, movies, gaming music, K-pop and J-pop, amongst others. The ensemble comprises musically passionate primary and secondary school ruan players, a majority of whom are students of Mr. Jim Tan. With such youthful voices and a contemporary approach to the interpretation and performing of this ancient plucked-string instrument, the ensemble aims to spark the interest and appreciation of this instrument in youths.

Tropical Harmony Ensemble was formed in Dec 2009. The ensemble was started by Eiko Shinoda, an erhu teacher teaching in Eason Music and Tan Sung Wah, who is the owner of Eason Music. The ensemble was formed to bring together the Japanese in Singapore who are learning the erhu so that they have an avenue to play together as a group.

Currently, the ensemble consists of 10 members who are mainly Japanese housewives.  Most of the members are learning the erhu at Eason Music and have been learning for 1-3 years. They meet every Monday at Telok Ayer Arts Centre for a 2-hour practice with Chin Yen Choong.

The ensemble is led and conducted by Chin Yen Choong, who is also an erhu teacher in Eason Music. The pieces they play are specially arranged into different parts for the erhu by the conductor and members of the ensemble.

In Feb 2011, they had their first concert at the Japanese Association which was well received. Following the same year in Oct 2011, they had their 2nd concert at the same venue. This concert coincides with the first anniversary of the tsunami disaster in Japan. The ensemble would like to send their best wishes to their fellow Japanese and hope for a brighter future.

Marsiling Chinese Orchestra (MCO) was set up on 6 June 2004. Inaugurated in August 2004 by Mr Hawazi Daipi, the orchestra is a collaboration between Marsiling Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) and Marsiling Secondary School.

MCO’s primary objective is to enhance the appreciation and promote the education of Chinese Orchestra among Marsiling residents. The establishment of MCO gave the graduates of various schools’ Chinese Orchestra members the opportunity to further pursue their interest in this musical art form. This initiation has also enabled them to have a head start in making a contribution to the community by taking a proactive role in fostering a closer collaboration between the grassroots organisations, neighbouring schools and residents.

With a current strength of 183 members which includes three Malays, many talented members of MCO have won places in the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra. Some have also received awards in the prestigious bi-annual National Chinese Music Competition organised by the Singapore National Arts Council.

Under the baton of our Music Director cum Conductor Low Cher Yong (former musician and Conducting Assistant of Singapore Chinese Orchestra), MCO has performed at many important functions.

Marsiling Chinese Orchestra’s involvement in the million-dollar local film “Kallang Roar” was a milestone event for both MCO and the local Chinese Orchestra scene, as it became the very first Chinese Orchestra to be involved in the recording of a movie soundtrack.

Dizi maestro Zhan Yong Ming performs the Neverending Resentment, a technically challenging piece based on the love story of Emperor Tang Xuan Zong and his concubine Yang Yu Huan. SCO Associate Conductor Quek Ling Kiong and SCO sheng principal Guo Chang Suo will take on a newly-commissioned sheng solo piece by Zhang Xiao Peng that showcases the full range of the Chinese instrument. Chengsan Chinese orchestra was set up 15 years ago and has received accolades by the National Arts Council (NAC) when it took top honours at the National Chinese Music Competitions (NCMC) in 1996, 1998 and 2000.

In 1996, the orchestra was runner-up in the ensemble category and the senior ensemble category in 2000, but won the top prize in the ensemble open category in 2002.

Keat Hong Chinese Orchestra (KHCO) was established in 1974, and it is a cultural group that comes under the auspices of Singapore Chua Chu Kang Community Club.

The 80-member group won the Singapore National Youth Service Award in 1993, came in tops and picked up the Best Performance Award at the National Music Competition from 1987 to 1993. 

In 1996, KHCO was awarded the National Youth Letter of Commendation.

The orchestra has since been developing young talents and contributing to the promotion of Chinese music in Singapore.

The Hong Kah Community Club Chinese Orchestra of 45 musicians was established in 2000. Its members are made up of primary and secondary students with a common interest in Chinese Orchestra music and the performing arts.

The group has since grown in size and stature and aims to extend its reach, especially now that is has come under the baton of renowned Suona player Lee Heng Quee.

Lee Heng Quee joined the People’s Association Youth Chinese Orchestra in 1981 and is a musician with Singapore Chinese Orchestra since 1985. He is also the conductor at the Singapore Polytechnic Chinese Orchestra, and various secondary schools, picking up awards along the way for his contribution to the development and appreciation of Chinese orchestral music.

Gek Poh Ville Community Club’s (GPVCC) Chinese Orchestra was established in1998. The 40-member strong orchestra troupe comprises the following four sections: Percussion, percussion pluck (liuqin, pipa, yangqin and zhongruan), string (cello, double bass, erhu and zhonghu) and wind (dizi and suona).

Held at Singapore Conference Hall Exhibition Hall, this is a wonderful opportunity for music audience to be introduced to the art exhibits. About 30 paintings would be displayed, some on musical subjects, others on local street and other scenes, subject on trees etc, juxtaposing old and new buildings on conventional home town street scene in realistic way, and also featuring present day’s Chinatown .
