Singapore, July 9, 2025 – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will present two exciting chamber music concerts in August and September, showcasing the diverse and rich dimensions of Chinese orchestral music. The first concert, Pizzicato, will kick off in August, featuring talented young musicians. In September, the orchestra’s veteran wind musicians will take centre stage in Virtuosic Winds.

Chamber Charms: Pizzicato
Jointly curated by SCO Plucked String Section Leader and Sanxian Principal Huang Guifang, Yangqin Principal Qu Jianqing and Pipa Principal Yu Jia, Pizzicato highlights the vitality and virtuosity of young musicians in the SCO pluck section. This chamber concert primarily features plucked-string instruments, with a repertoire ranging from duets to larger ensemble compositions. New works and arrangements include world premiere of the newly arranged Childhood by Wang Chenwei, and the Singapore premiere of Narati by Liu Chang. Other pieces, such as Antiphonal Flower Song, and Dunhuang, will be presented in various ensemble formats, offering the audience a variety of refreshing auditory experience.

Chamber Charms: Virtuosic Winds
On 5 September, Virtuosic Winds shines a spotlight on wind instruments, presenting a powerful and delicate concert of blowing instruments. Jointly curated by Yin Zhiyang, Winds & Percussion Section Leader/Dizi Principal, Guo Changsuo, Sheng Principal and Jin Shiyi, Suona/Guan Principal, this programme features well-known masterpieces, including the Theme of Pioneers and Grand Prelude, with the former’s intense momentum and the latter’s tight rhythmic, showcasing both technical skill and dramatic tension. Farewell at Yangguan will be beautifully conveyed by the guan, evoking the eternal sorrow found in Wang Wei’s poetry, while Autumn Yearning at the Dressing Table will evoke the delicate and emotional melodies of an ancient woman’s deep solitude upon arrival at the frontier.
The Virtuosic Winds, first performed during the pandemic in 2021, has been highly praised and is now returning to the live stage, continuing the legacy of classic works while elevating the art form to new heights.
These two concerts, as part of the SCO’s chamber charms series, not only showcase the unique charm of different instruments but also continue the orchestra’s commitment to artistic innovation and the preservation of musical traditions. SCO invites music lovers to join in this celebration of Chinese orchestral music.
