Behind every performance on stage are personal stories shaped by rehearsal venues, mentors and moments of musical discovery. The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is delighted to welcome 4 new musicians whose journeys with music are as individual as they are inspiring. Coming from diverse backgrounds and training pathways, they now share a common “space” both on stage and off stage — making music together, one rehearsal and one concert at a time. Get to know our newest members of the SCO family, and the professionals behind the instruments.

Dadi/Xindi – Ng Hsien Han
What kind of music do you like?
I love Chinese traditional music because its melodies are simple, memorable and deeply moving.
What’s something you find challenging about your work?
One key challenge is mastering and presenting music from many different genres within a short time frame, while crafting my own interpretation, making it meaningful and understandable to the audience.
If you could play another instrument, what would it be?
The piano — because it allows me to play both the accompaniment and melody independently, without the need for other supporting instruments.
Best place you’ve travelled to
Australia — it’s the furthest place I’ve travelled to. I truly enjoyed the lifestyle, culture and beautiful weather there.
Something you’re proud of
I’m proud to be a father of four. It’s always heart-warming to return to a lively, “noisy” home after work, knowing my family is there for me.
Your idea of a perfect day
A perfect day would be to wake up naturally, relax in my massage chair for an hour and enjoy a breakfast without thinking about anything (which rarely happens, because I’m a workaholic! 😄

What’s the most exciting part of your job?
The preparation phase is most exciting for me because I always look forward to hearing new music that will be presented for upcoming concerts. During the preparation phase, many changes could happen and it makes the whole music making process interesting and fun.
What’s something you find challenging about your work?
Preparing my instrument for work is the most challenging. Being a double reed instrument, I can’t possibly play the instrument without the necessary accessories. I could spend hours and even days to ensure that I’m using the best equipment for my work, to bring the most out of my instrument that greatly supports my performance. 🙂
If you could play another instrument, what would it be?
The Saxophone! As a woodwind musician, wind instruments resonate with me best, and I am always intrigued by the beautiful sound of the wind instruments. I’ve chosen Saxophone because there are some similarities to Suona, in terms of the instrument fingerings. It allowed me to pick up the instrument quickly during my national service and I had the honour to support the Singapore Armed Forces as a Saxophonist in the Singapore Armed Forces Band.
Are you a coffee or tea person?
I was a “tea person” before becoming a “coffee person”. It was somewhat difficult for me to appreciate the taste of the coffee when I was younger hence I preferred tea instead. As I grow older, I tend to enjoy the taste of the coffee.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a police officer. I enjoy helping others and I hope that I could contribute to the society in any way possible within my capacity. Prior to joining the Singapore Armed Forces, I thought to myself that if I was chosen to serve my national service with the Singapore Police Force, I might sign-on to be a regular police officer.
What’s your idea of a perfect day?
Waking up naturally, enjoying my meals, having a good cup of coffee and spending time with my loved ones.

ENFJ-A(主人公)。 妥妥的 ENFJ-A。
