competition

Organised by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) was previously known as the National Chinese Music Competition. The biennale competition was first organised by the National Arts Council (NAC) in 1998 after the restructuring of the former National Music Competition which was under the auspices of the then Ministry of Culture in the 1980s. The 1st edition of SCMC was held in 2020.

OVERVIEW

The SCMC provides an excellent platform to develop the performing skills of young musicians, raise musical standards, discover new talents and connect our people, by supporting their lifelong interest in pursue of Chinese music in Singapore.

Participants of this distinguished competition platform in Singapore have been appraised by a panel of local and international Chinese music veterans. Over the years, the competition has seen many winners progress into Chinese music professionals, with some gaining international repute. The continuous discovery of these promising musicians will help to ensure a diverse and vibrant music scene in Singapore.

Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), inaugurated in 1997, is Singapore’s only professional national Chinese orchestra. SCO, made up of more than 80 musicians, occupies the Singapore Conference Hall, which is a national monument. With Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as its patron, SCO takes on the twin role of preserving traditional arts and culture and establishing its unique identity through the incorporation of Southeast Asian cultural elements in its music.

Quek Ling Kiong – Resident Conductor

Quek Ling Kiong was a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award (2002); the Cultural Fellowship (2013), Singapore COMPASS Meritorious Award (2016), and Singapore ‘Lianhe Zaobao’ iconic personality (2018). In 2019, Singapore Management University established ‘Quek Ling Kiong Arts and Cultural Scholarship’ to support undergraduates venturing into arts management.

Moses Gay – Associate Conductor

Hailed by The Straits Times as an “excellent young conductor”, Moses Gay’s first foray into conducting began at the age of 16, where he earned great praise from renowned Chinese conductor Ku Lap Man while conducting Phoon Yew Tien’s The Forge Ahead. Since then, he has developed into an outstanding musician, graduating with First Class Honours from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and obtaining a Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the China Conservatory of Music, both on full scholarship.
