Singapore, 24 July 2019 (Wednesday) — Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will premiere renowned composer Zhao Jiping’s new masterwork, The Feng Ya Song Symphony, in Singapore. Conducted by Music Director Tsung Yeh, The Feng Ya Song Symphony concert will be held on 3 August 2019 (Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall. Zhao Jiping, as a composer, professor, doctoral tutor, at present holds the position of the president of Chinese Musicians Association. Over the years, Zhao has created a host of excellent music works, which embraces repertoires such as symphonic poem ‘Farewell My Concubine’ and symphonic suite ‘Courtyard of Family Qiao’.

The Feng Ya Song Symphony, which is commissioned by the China Federation of Literary Art Circles and Chinese Musicians’ Association, comprises of five movements. SCO will perform The Feng Ya Song Symphony’s complete five movements, namely Prelude—Ode, Guan Ju, Mythical Bird, Melody of the Secluded Orchid and Guo Feng. Composer Zhao has great appreciation towards the Chinese culture and claimed responsibility for culture composition. Acquiring from the archaic accumulated poetries, the Classic of Poetry, and Tang poetry, the representative chapters have its unique ethnic music language and comprise of different ways in expressing salutation towards the illustrious Chinese culture.

SCO will also perform Enjott Schneider’s exuberant work – Earth and Fire, a sheng concerto, with sheng master, Wu Wei. Wu Wei will also travel with SCO to perform this work in Italy on 6 September and in Greece on 9 September. Wu Wei studied the sheng instrument at the Shanghai Music Conservatory in 1992. In 1995, Wu Wei obtained a DAAD scholarship and studied at the Hans Eisler Music Academy in Berlin, where he is now based. Wu Wei was also a Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

This concert is suited for Chinese Cultural lovers who can experience how Chinese poems influence music composition. Zhao Jiping, Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Musicians' Association will also be giving a pre-concert talk on 3 August 2019 (Saturday), from 6pm to 7.30pm, at Singapore Conference Hall. He will be sharing his thoughts on the piece The Feng Ya Song Symphony and his composition journey. Admission is free.
