Singapore, 8 August 2019 (Thursday) — Singapore Chinese Orchestra will be collaborating with the world renowned violinist Kam Ning to present the classical work piece Butterfly Lovers. Under the baton of Music Director Tsung Yeh, Kam Ning with SCO: Butterfly Lovers concert will be held on 24 August 2019 (Saturday), 8pm, at the SCO Concert Hall. Due to overwhelming responses, all tickets have been sold out for this concert; limited seats for Open Rehearsals are now open!

The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend which depicts a heart wrenching story of a pair of lovers who is inextricably linked to one another. The title “Butterfly Lovers” is also known as Lian Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai and it is abbreviated prevalently as Liang Zhu. The repertoire, Butterfly Lovers, is composed by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang, and rearranged by Yan Huichang and Ku Lap-Man. This concert is a prelude to SCO’s upcoming concerts in Europe. Kam Ning will also be travelling with SCO to Berlin and Prague on 31 August and 3 September and presenting this evergreen repertoire Butterfly Lovers to the European audience.

The concert also features two winning works from the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC). In year 2015, Gordon Fung Dic-Lun won the first prize in the SICCOC 2015, organized by SCO. Yu Jia, SCO Pipa Principal musician, performed the Pipa concerto award-winning piece namely Arise, You Lion of Glory. Composed by Fung, the grandiose piece Arise, You Lion of Glory is rich in the culture of the Cantonese tunes Xingshi and lion dance. Besides winning the Composition Award first prize in the SICCOC 2015, the piece has also garnered the most votes from the audiences. In the upcoming concert, Yu Jia will be presenting the piece Arise, You Lion of Glory. Kahchun Wong’s Krakatoa which was originally scored for wind orchestra, was honoured with the Singaporean Composer Award in the same competition. It depicts the unforeseeable environmental catastrophe that aroused from the appearance of tranquil nature.

Furthermore, SCO will present Tan Dun’s Yellow Earth.
