Singapore, 5 August 2019 (Monday) – Come and celebrate the Nation’s birthday with The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) on 10 August 2019, 6pm at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. As part of the SPH Gift of Music Series, the home-grown Chinese orchestra will be performing at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage and presenting “Our Singapore Songs!” - An exciting line-up of familiar patriotic favourites, Xinyao classics and new inspirations. Don your most glamorous red and white outfit, come expecting for a jubilant yet heart-warming evening as we celebrate our Nation together with the captivating sounds of Chinese orchestral music! Admission is free-for-all. This concert is also a double celebration as Singapore Press Holdings marks its 35th anniversary this year.

Quek Ling Kiong, resident conductor of SCO will first lead the orchestra to perform Super Mario Brothers Theme Medley. This piece is adapted from the Nintendo console game, Super Mario Brothers. It consists of the theme songs from the various stages found in the game, namely Overworld and the Waltz from the Underwater World. Take a walk down memory lane as SCO performs Street Opera Of The Lion City which depicts the fun and exuberant activities during the olden days of Singapore.

Listen to the beautiful elements of Singapore’s vibrant multi-cultural landscape as SCO performs Suriram, adapted from the famous local Malay folk song. This folk song describes a young man singing a song to express his love for his lady, Suriram.

In conjunction with this National Day season, SCO will go on to showcase patriotic tunes widely-known and loved by Singaporeans, such as Stand Up For Singapore, released in 1984 followed by We Are Singapore, released in 1987. These heart-warming pieces are bound to tug at your heartstrings.

SCO will go on to perform Voices from the heart, the catchy opening theme song of Singapore’s longest-running television drama from 1986-1988, Neighbours. For audience who love the sound of the Chinese bamboo flute, dizi, be blown away as the orchestra showcases a stunning dizi performance with Liang Wern Fook’s 1990 album title track, Singapore Pie. This track inter-weaved one’s personal history and national history, making a statement that the two are intricately linked.

SCO will end the concert with The Developing Years from the Xinyao Medley, consisting of two songs. This will be the highlight for fans of Xinyao, a popular music movement that blossomed in Singapore in the 1980s. The orchestra will present songs composed by renowned pioneers of Xinyao, Liang Wern Fook and Eric Moo. Reminiscent the days of the past as SCO performs Sparrow with a Bamboo Twig and A Beautiful Youth, songs that depict the memories of growing up in Singapore. This concert is held in conjunction with Singapore Botanic Gardens’ 160 years.
