Singapore, 29 October 2019 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra presents Young People’s Concert: Once Upon A Chinese Orchestra, a concert which shares about the origin of Chinese orchestra, discusses the growth and evolution of Chinese Orchestra, and is deemed as the “starter pack for CO music”. Conducted by SCO Assistant Conductor Moses Gay, this two-day only concert will be held on 7 and 9 November 2019, 10.30am (Thursday) and 5pm (Saturday) at SCO Concert Hall.

Traveling through time, the story begins when Moses Gay started playing a single instrument; the Sheng, Erhu, Pipa and Dizi, in front of a small crowd of audience at the ancient China teahouse. Slowly, the story uncovers as a group of friends come together to play music. As music evolves over time, many compositions for the music instruments started to incorporate complex rhythms and extended harmonies.

Moses Gay, the conductor and curator of the Young People’s Concert programme said, “There are many considerations while planning for this concert, for example: the age and ethnicity of the audience, the size of the practice venues, and the number of rehearsals etc. For this concert, I believe that the biggest challenge is to overcome the stereotype that “Chinese Orchestra is old-fashioned, and Chinese Orchestra is for the old people”. Through the use of multimedia, this will help to enhance the experience of the young people, when they come watch this concert. “

Other notable highlights include: a pre-concert activity on 9 November 2019, Saturday at 4pm. Ticket holders will be able to get their hands on seven different types of Chinese musical instruments found in a Chinese Orchestra. There are a total of 7 stations to visit.

Collect a stamp at each station and upon completion, you will be able to design your very own badge.
