Singapore, 24 March 2020 (Tuesday) – In view of the current situation, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) took precautionary measures to ensure the wellbeing of our staff, musicians, artistes, participants and audiences. Thus, announcements were made to cancel our upcoming Tunes from Yunnan concert and to postpone the Singapore Chinese Music Competition 2020.
Postponement of Singapore Chinese Music Competition 2020
The Singapore Chinese Music Competition 2020 will be postponed from 18 June – 12 July 2020 to 23 November – 12 December 2020. This is a deliberate decision by the organiser Singapore Chinese Orchestra.
SCO Executive Director, Nominated Member of Parliament Terence Ho said: “Given the uncertainty and changing situation globally, the decision was made with the health and safety of participants and staff as the top priority. We hope to encourage participants that have already signed up, to make use of this opportunity to further refine your work. For those with keen interest but haven’t signed up, take this opportunity to step up to the challenge.”
With the newly announced competition dates, there is an extension to the registration deadline for Ensemble and Orchestra. Furthermore, the Solo (Junior / Intermediate / Senior categories) registration will also reopen from end of March 2020. The new registration deadline for all categories (Solo, Ensemble and Orchestra) will be Monday, 3 August 2020, 5pm.
The Singapore Chinese Music Competition (SCMC) 2020, previously known as National Chinese Music Competition, seeks to provide an excellent platform to develop the performing skills of young musicians, raise musical standards, discover new talents, and to connect our people by supporting their lifelong interest in pursuit of Chinese music in Singapore. There is a total of S$147,700 worth of prizes to be won. Participating groups that enter the Finals in their respective categories will also receive prize money worth $500 (ensemble) and $1000 (Orchestra). Registration fee will also be fully refunded to participating groups upon appearance on the competition day.
Also, to encourage more participants in forming their own ensemble groups, the organiser will provide necessary assistance to groups by providing suitable practice venue (if required). There is also no age limit for participants taking part in the Ensemble and Orchestra categories. Each ensemble shall consist of a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 20 members, with any combination of Chinese musical instruments from the same instrument family or type. For the Orchestra category, it shall consist of a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 80 members, with a combination of Chinese musical instruments from Strings, Plucked-strings, Wind and Percussion sections.
The Singapore Chinese Music Competition is supported by Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, National Arts Council, Tote Board, Temasek Foundation, and in partnership with People’s Association, Singapore Chinese Music Federation, Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) and Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.
