The rich and colourful world of Chinese Orchestral music is so all-encompassing that even animals are regularly being featured. The galloping stallion, the formidable tiger, the glamorous peacock, the adorable panda… For decades, mankind’s best friends have provided much inspiration for master composers of Chinese music, for every movement of theirs can be translated into lively music, creating a vibrant world of sound.

Under the baton of SCO’s Assistant Conductor Moses Gay, veteran musicians team up with their younger colleagues to bring you on a Chinese Orchestra style wild ride through the animal kingdom. Feel the power of nature and join us in a rhapsodic evening of Untamed Melodies!

Conductor: Moses Gay

SCO Assistant Conductor Moses Gay said: “During the Circuit Breaker, it was the first time I got ‘confined’ at home, for months. Suddenly, the environment around us turned so quiet and it is one of the rare times that nature seemed to be taking over our city. Grasses grew longer, trees became bigger, lesser cars on the roads, shops were not open etc. Then a sudden thought, “what if animals start roaming about”? Hence the theme emerged!”

Doubling up as the programme curator, Moses Gay also shared the following highlights of this animal-themed concert:

 “Adventure for all ages”

6 out of 8 pieces involve soloists from the four instrumental sections of the Chinese Orchestra’s bowed-strings, wind, plucked-strings and percussion section(吹拉弹打), enabling the audience to experience these four different sections in one hour. Moreover, the animal themed programme is fun, cheeky, and bite-sized, definitely an hour of adventure for people of all ages!

“Same but different”

Every piece in the programme represents different composers’ impression of different animals. The interesting part is: the composers are of different ages and generation. Therefore, the composition style differs, yet the theme - Animals - remains the same. But fear not, these pieces are definitely accessible to audience from all generations!
