Conductor: Quek Ling Kiong
SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong said: “Actually, the title of this concert An Affinity with Nature!, originally came from this Chinese poem which I wrote below, titled ‘Mother Nature, Oh So Beautiful’. During the Circuit Breaker, I had many realisations about life. I wrote this descriptive poem and took many photographs. In the end, I gave the title a little twist using the homophonic word "yuan" and the concert title emerged. I hope that musicians and audience members will be given the chance to appreciate the beautiful good works, after such a long hiatus. This covid-19 brought forth many realisations, and allowed all mankind to experience the so-called impermanence of life; everything changes and even until today, our plans still cannot keep up with the changes."

Accumulated life experiences during Father’s Passing
Quek Ling Kiong said,” My father passed away on 10th May 2020, during the Circuit Breaker period. All these moments allowed me to accumulate life experiences. I love to draw connections and share stories with everyone, during a concert. For instance, this year's SCO National Day online concert allowed viewers to take a trip down the memory lane of our nation's history and it shared how the torrential rain in 1966 inspired future generations of Singaporeans. The 20 November concert titled Awfully Joyful also encompasses my feelings and thoughts, it communicated my artistic ideals; all these which I intended to share about the truth, goodness and beauty of music.
Cherish the Present, Live the Moment
He shared, “For this concert, the ‘affinity’ part comprised of Winds of Affinity, Destiny and Nocturnal Peace. During this crucial period of time, there are still many who are unable to meet and visit their loved ones. Yet, a couple of them have passed on, even before they had a chance to see each other again. Cherish the Present, Live the Moment. When all things come to an end, do not despair. Look out of the window. There, the sky is blue, the sun is shining and the birds are singing. Breathe, for nature is still right beside you.”

20 November 2020 Awfully Joyful Digital Concert
A gathering of close friends culminates in an evening of joyous discourse and music-making. Join us virtually or in-person for a Friday evening of chamber music featuring the various sections of the Chinese orchestra, and experience the camaraderie of small-ensemble music-making formed through years of close collaboration.
Inspired by Liu Xing’s Tuesday Gathering, SCO’s 5th Digital Chamber concert titled Awfully Joyful is specially curated by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong. This concert will be livestreamed on the online platform SISTIC LIVE from the SCO Concert Hall on 20 November (Friday) 2020, 8pm. The concert video will be available for unlimited playback till 29 November 2020 (Sunday), 8pm. The approximate concert duration is 50 minutes long.
Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) members, alumni, as well as their instructors were invited to form the chamber ensemble for the night’s concert. Sit back and relax, as 30 SCO and SNYCO musicians present an evening comprising of 8 pieces of joyful and melodious music. As part of the joyous occasion, the dizi quartet will perform Raindrop, the sheng and huqin sextet will perform Childhood and Bows and Strings respectively. The plucked strings quintet will perform Reminiscence and the octet will present Dunhuang.
Quek Ling Kiong explained that he was initially inspired by Liu Xing’s Tuesday Gathering, so the concept is that “there were a few people coming together to jam and play music, and the numbers slowly increased and this famous piece was composed. This concert aims to constantly pursue chamber ensemble’s artistic excellence. No matter its Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, we strive to model after the spirit and camaraderie in Liu Xing’s Tuesday Gathering, to gather and play music together – be awfully joyful”.
