Singapore, December 16, 2024 – The Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) is thrilled to announce the start of its 24/25 concert season! This season’s lineup will feature local compositions that highlight Singapore's multicultural heritage alongside global classics. Featuring three major ticketed concerts—Youthful Rhapsody, Musical Voyage II, and Legacy III—the season promises an extraordinary lineup of performances designed to captivate and inspire audiences. Kicking off the season, the "Youthful Rhapsody" concert on 21 December 2024, conducted by the accomplished Taiwanese conductor Liu Chiang-Pin, this concert will embody vibrant youthfulness, setting the stage for a dynamic series of performances throughout the season.

A season full of highlights and inspiration

SNYCO Music Director Quek Ling Kiong reflected on the orchestra’s journey: “As the SNYCO marks its 21st year, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone for your unwavering love and support. This season is a celebration of Singapore’s rich multicultural spirit, seamlessly intertwined with global influences. Featuring works that reflect our unique local heritage alongside timeless classics from around the world, we hope our performances will create meaningful and lasting connections with our audience.”

Three key highlights to look forward to this season include:

  • Original compositions, cultural stories
    SNYCO will showcase new works by talented local composers, bringing Singapore’s unique cultural narratives to life through music.
  • Fresh Leadership, Captivating Performances
    Guest conductor Liu Chiang-Pin will lead the opening concert, while newly appointed SNYCO conductor Lien Boon Hua will helm upcoming performances, bringing dynamic and engaging musical experiences to the audience.
  • Legacy III
    The season’s highlight is the Legacy III concert, a collaborative performance by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and SNYCO, fully embodying the spirit of preserving and passing down our rich cultural traditions.

Nurturing the next generation of musical talent

As a pillar of Singapore’s efforts to nurture young talent, SNYCO goes beyond staging performances to provide holistic support for its members. Programmes such as the New Learners’ Programme offers participants receive subsidised private lessons from a dedicated team of 13 professional musicians from the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and may also get to perform at SNYCO concerts and observe masterclasses and workshop prior to participating in the next audition. Additionally, the Individual Instrumental Tuition Scheme allowing them to benefit from 24 hours of subsidised private lessons each year with a highly experienced instructor. Together, these programmes develop a vibrant new talent pool for both SNYCO and SCO, fostering the growth of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral landscape.

SNYCO also organizes masterclasses and workshops led by renowned artists and industry professionals, providing members with invaluable technical guidance and artistic inspiration. Complementing these are overseas tours, immersion programmes, and music camps, which enhance members’ skills, expand their cultural horizons, and cultivate their potential as future leaders in Chinese orchestral music.

Over the past 21 years, SNYCO has stayed true to its mission of blending cultural tradition with creative innovation, fostering a new generation of outstanding musicians. This year, 17 members achieved notable success in the Singapore Chinese music competition, further cementing the orchestra’s role as a leader in youth development and artistic achievement.

About SNYCO

The Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra (SNYCO) is made up of more than 90 talented musicians between the ages of 10 to 26. SNYCO is managed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Company Limited, and is under the purview of the National Arts Council and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth since 1 April 2015. SNYCO is under the music directorship of Quek Ling Kiong and Lien Boon Hua as the conductor. Only the finest musicians are selected to be members through the rigorous auditions held each year. As a National Project of Excellence recognised by the Ministry of Education, SNYCO strives to nurture aspiring musicians into future pillars of Chinese music in Singapore.
