Singapore, 3 August 2012 (Friday) – Esteemed Taiwanese conductor Su Wen Cheng will take centrestage with the SCO in 2 nights of uniquely Taiwanese-flavoured concerts. Joining him are Taiwanese pan flute master Chang Chung Li and SCO Erhu 1 Principal, Zhao Jian Hua, who will perform with the SCO in a number of Su Wen Cheng’s compositions.
Su Wen Cheng is not only a conductor but is also an established composer. In this concert, his masterpieces – Capriccio Taiwan, The Legend of Master Feng, Elation of the Bamboo Flute and The Swallow – will be performed. The opening piece, Capriccio Taiwan, illustrates the beauty of Taiwan through its smooth-flowing melody. The Legend of Master Feng depicts the character of Master Feng protecting the people and the people expressing their love towards their homeland. Pan flute master Chang Chung Li will join the SCO in Su Wen Cheng’s pan flute concerto Elation of the Bamboo Flute. Long and short bamboo tubes of the pan flute tightly connected together creates melodies that sounds like nature reverberating in the air that is so mysterious yet graceful. SCO’s erhu principal Zhao Jian Hua will perform a beautiful erhu concerto The Swallow – a piece composed by Su Wen Cheng during his days in America, expressing his love to his wife.
Su Wen Cheng will also lead the SCO in renowned composer Zhao Ji Ping’s In Search of the Roots of the Ancient Pagoda Tree – a composition which expresses one’s longing and love for his homeland and portrays the happy scene of his return to the beloved hometown. Taiwanese composer Lo Leung Fai’s Spring paints the scene of spring, showcasing the joyous mood of people wandering in the green countryside and expresses their confidence and hope during the picturesque season.
Su Wen Cheng is an established Taiwanese conductor and composer. He was the Music Director and conductor of the Taiwan National Chinese Orchestra from 2009 to 2011. He is the chairman of the Republic of China Chinese Orchestra Society, president of Zhong Hua Chinese Orchestra, the head of Su Wen Cheng Chamber Orchestra, Music Director of Taipei Liuqin Chamber Orchestra and Associate Professor of the National Taiwan University of Arts. Su Wen Cheng received numerous awards such as The People’s Republic of China Ten Outstanding Young Men in 1990. His masterpieces include The Swallow, Capriccio Taiwan, Cowherd and Weaving Maid, The Garden after Rain, and The Legend of Master Feng.
Chang Chung Li graduated from the National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA). He joined the Taiwan National Chinese Orchestra as a dizi musician after he graduated from the NTUA. He has held numerous bamboo flute solo concerts. From 1994 to 2011, he has recorded 14 solo pan flute albums and 5 of his albums were selected as the finalist of the Golden Melody Awards.
SCO’s erhu principal Zhao Jian Hua graduated from the prestigious College of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. He won numerous laurels at high-profile competitions such as the National Ethnic Instrumental Music Competition in Wuhan, and the Shanghai City Young Musician Association Competition (1985). His biography is also recorded in an entry of Record of Outstanding Chinese Youths and the Record of Chinese Musicians. He is also a member of the Chinese Musicians’ Association.
