Singapore, 10 October 2012 (Wednesday) – Three of the best pipa masters will come together to perform with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) on 23 and 24 November at the SCO Concert Hall. Music Director Tsung Yeh will conduct this two-night concert of classic pipa repertoire.
On 23 November, Central Conservatory of Music’s Associate Professor Zhang Qiang will perform Wang Hui Ran’s Dance of Yi Tribe. He will make use of the unique “four-wheel fingers” technique to present the polyphonic and symphonic music effects of the piece. China Conservatory of Music’s Associate Professor Yang Jing will perform renowned pipa concerto Harmonious Split, composed by Jing Xiang. SCO pipa principal, Yu Jia, will perform a lively piece, Little Sisters of the Grassland, by Wu Zu Qiang, Wang Yan Qiao and Liu De Hai.
On 24 November, Zhang Qiang will play Gu Guan Ren’s Hua Mu Lan. Let him tell you the story of Hua Mu Lan, a heroine who takes her aged father’s place in the army. Yang Jing will perform the renowned ancient tune Along the Strategic Pass to illustrate the story of Wang Zhao Jun, who departs for the frontier. Yu Jia will challenge Zhang Qiang and Yang Jing with renowned composer Liu De Hai’s The Swan. Utilising arpeggios, Yu Jia will portray the vibrations of the swan’s feathers and the waves being roused on the surface of the lake.
The finale is a specially commissioned concerto grosso by renowned Chinese composer Kuan Nai-chung – Joy of A Toast and A Whirling Dance – for the three musicians, which will world premiere at this concert.
Zhang Qiang, Associate Professor of the Central Conservatory of Music, is an established pipa musician. He is a committee member of China Nationalities Orchestra Society (CNOS) and Assistant Secretary of Pipa Professional Committee. He won the first prize in the 1st Guangdong International Music Competition (1987), the first prize in the 2nd International Jiangnan Sizhu Music Competition (1992) and the first prize in the 1st Taibei Traditional Chinese Instrument Concerto Competition (1993).
Yang Jing, Associate Professor of the China Conservatory of Music, is one of the most charismatic pipa musicians. She is a member of China Nationalities Orchestra Society and the president of the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra. She has won numerous pipa awards. She has also participated in numerous Art Festivals in Berlin, Prague, Edinburgh, Chicago, Wellington, Seoul, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Copenhagen.
Yu Jia, SCO’s pipa principal, started learning pipa and piano at the age of four from her father, Yu Song Lin. She graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in 1997. Yu Jia won the second prize in the China ART Cup Competition Pipa Section (1989), the first prize in the Central Conservatory of Music First Chinese Instrumental Solo Competition (1994), the second prize in the China Hua Xia Chinese Instrumental Competition Pipa Section (1995) and the second prize in the 7th Taipei Chinese Musical Instrumental Competition Pipa Section (1999).
