Singapore, 30 November 2012 (Friday) – After his debut with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) in 2006, Maestro Zhang Guo Yong, the artistic director of the Shanghai Opera House, professor and dean of the conducting department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music returns to lead the SCO on a one-night only concert on 26 January 2013.
Zhang Guo Yong began conducting studies in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of famous conductor Professor Huang Xiao Tong. In 1993, he was transferred by the government to study at the Moscow State Conservatory named after Tchaikovsky, where he received tutelage with the world famous conducting maestro Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Zhang Guo Yong has conducted many orchestras and well-known musicians in numerous countries. His conducting talent is well received in Russia, and he has been referred to as the best interpreter of Shostakovich’s symphonies in China. He has performed in various countries including France, United Stated, Germany, Switzerland, Russia and Australia. In 2006, he was invited to be a member of jury of the 8th Cadaques Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain.
The concert commences with Xie Xiang Ming’s A Stroll in the Lion City. The piece won the first prize at the 2011 Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition, which depicts the vibrant, elegant and bustling city life of Singapore. SCO dizi principal Yin Zhi Yang will perform Tang Jian Ping’s Fei Ge, a piece that expresses the festive merriment and fervor. SCO erhu musician Xu Wen Jing will debut a new commissioned piece by Wang Yue Ming – Sketches of Xinjiang, which will world premiere in this concert. The orchestra will also perform Guo Wen Jing’s A Va Mountain from Dianxi Folk Tunes, Liu Xing’s Invisible Sword and He Xun Tian’s Capriccio of River Dabo.
Yin Zhi Yang started learning violin and dizi at the age of eight. He graduated from the China Conservatory of Music in 1991 and served in the China Central Song and Dance Troupe as a soloist thereafter. He joined the SCO in 1997 as a dizi musician and is currently the Dizi Principal. He received the Outstanding Performance Award at the China National Chinese Music Competition Shan Cheng Cup in 1989. In 2005, he toured with the orchestra to Europe and in 2009, he performed as a soloist at the Edinburgh International Festival. He has also participated in many performances in China, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Macau.
Xu Wen Jing started learning erhu at the age of five. She graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music and joined the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra as an erhu player thereafter. She was also appointed as the tutor of Central Conservatory of Music. Xu Wen Jing joined SCO since 1997. In 2005, she performed solo at the Budapest Spring Festival, the Singapore Season in London and Gateshead. In the same year, she represented SCO to perform at Washington.
