Singapore, 29 January 2013 (Tuesday) – After his debut with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) in 2008, young Chinese conductor, Liu Sha, returns to conduct the SCO at a one-night only concert on 9 March.
Liu Sha graduated from the Conducting Department of Central Conservatory of Music, where his studied symphony conducting under the tutelage of famous conductor and educator, Professor Xu Xin. He also chose his minor of Chinese National Music Conducting, studying from Professor Wang Fujian. He also received tutelage with renowned Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa, Russian conductor Rostropovich and Finnish conductor Jorma Panula. In 2011, he began his conducting studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he received tutelage with world famous conducting maestro, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Alexander Polishchuk. Liu Sha is the Conductor-in-Residence of China National Orchestra and China Youth National Orchestra of the Central Conservatory of Music, Guest Conductor Chair of the China Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, Invited Conductor of the Central Conservatory of Music and Xi’an Conservatory of Music, and has served as advisor to Taishan Culture. He conducted the performance in Chinese National Orchestra Competition host by the Ministry of Culture both in 2003 and 2006, which drew the professionals’ attention to him. He also received high acclaim from the Ministry of Culture for numerous times. He has led the China National Orchestra to perform in various countries including France, Russia, Korea, Switzerland and Italy. In 2011, he led the orchestra on a tour to Europe at Salzburg Festival.
The concert starts with Hao Wei Ya’s Qiu Jiang Hua Yue Ye. SCO guzheng musician, Xu Hui will perform Mo Fan’s guzheng concerto Dust in the Desert while SCO dizi musician, Zeng Zhi, will perform “Young Composer Award” winner of the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition 2011, Wang Dong Xu’s The Capriccio of the Mountain Folk Song. Kuan Nai-chung’s four-movement A Trip to Lhasa, will bring you to experience the mystery and grandeur of the Tibet plateau. The concert will also perform Wang Dan Hong’s joyous Strings on Yangko Dance.
Zeng Zhi started learning dizi at the age of twelve. He received the Outstanding Performance Award in the first Chinese Folk Instrument Competition in 2002. In 2004, he was admitted to the Instrumental Music Department of the China Conservatory of Music, under the tutelage of renowned dizi and xiao performer and educator Zhang Wei Liang. He joined the Chinese National Orchestra in 2007 and went for concert tours in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Italy and Egypt. He joined the UK group Dragon Arts in 2008, touring the UK and Spain, as well as participating in arts festivals in London, Newcastle and Stecker. He also performed in the Zaragoza World Expo. He is a dizi musician with SCO since 2008.
Xu Hui studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1997, under the tutelage of Guo Xue Jun and Yang Ru Wen. During her course of study, she was consecutively awarded with four years of scholarships. She graduated in 2001 and is currently SCO’s guzheng musician and percussionist. In 1992, she received the 1st prize in the International Jiangnan Sizhu Competition and Shanghai Young Talents Guzheng Competition. In 1995, she received silver medal at the National Cultural Stars Award. In 2001, she was invited by the French TV station to perform in the Shanghai – Paris satellite TV broadcasting performance. In the same year, she staged a highly acclaimed percussion concert entitled Qiu Wen.
