Singapore, 28 February 2013 (Thursday) – In celebration of its 10th Anniversary, the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) will present their annual major concert with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) – Dauntless Spirit 2013 – on 30 March at the SCO Concert Hall. This is also the first time that SYCO performs under the baton of three conductors in one concert: SCO and SYCO Music Director – Tsung Yeh, SCO Resident Conductor and SYCO Conductor – Quek Ling Kiong and SCO Conducting Assistant – Moses Gay En Hui.

SYCO will perform in a festive Celebration Overture by Zhao Ji Ping and a piece that was rearranged from a Tang poem and the Tang historical record – Tone Poem: Rainfall. They will also showcase their young talents in Peng Xiu Wen’s The Terracotta Warriors Fantasia – a masterpiece that vividly portrays the Qin soldiers who suffered in war and the families’ anxiously yearning for their return. SYCO’s liuqin musician Loi Ee Vian, who is also a liuqin diploma student at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, will share the stage with the SCO in Melody on a Moonlit River. This is a beautiful piece that showcases the magnificent of the Poem of Pipa written by Tang poet Bai Ju Yi. The finale will be a massive combined orchestra of the SYCO and the SCO in the first, second and sixth movements of Liu Xi Jin’s Mohe Tribe Suite. Let the music reveal the long history and splendid culture of the Mohe tribe!

SYCO is a group of highly talented young musicians between the ages of 11 to 26 years old. SYCO is under the management of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) since 2003 and has held its premier concert in 2004. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and Singapore Chinese Orchestra, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. Only the finest musicians, through auditions, are chosen to be members of SYCO. Last year, twelve SYCO members have won at the National Chinese Music Competition.

SYCO has also unveiled a fresh new look for its website. Users will be able to easily navigate for information on the SYCO from www.syco.com.sg.
