Singapore, 7 May 2013 (Tuesday) – Peking Opera, the quintessence of traditional Chinese theatre arts with more than two hundred years of history, is well known in the world as “Oriental Opera”. Co-directed by SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh and local Peking opera artist Tian Ping, SCO will stage two nights of star-studded performances with the Tianjin Municipal Youth Peking Opera Troupe. SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh conducts.
Tianjin Municipal Youth Peking Opera Troupe was founded in August 1984 and is one of the key national Peking opera troupes in China. It has more than 20 first class national actors and musicians. The troupe has toured Japan, Thailand, Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Cuba as well as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. For the very first time, famous actors including hualian, played by Meng Guang Lu (First Class National Actor, Recipient of Plum Blossom Drama Award & Mei Lanfang Golden Award); qingyi, played by Zhang Yan Ling (First Class National Actor, Recipient of Plum Blossom Drama Award and Vice Principal of Tianjin Art Vocational College); laosheng, played by Wu Guang Jiang (Second Class National Actor); sigu, performed by Cui Hong (First Class National Musician); jinghu musician, He Jian, and yueqin musician, Cui Xiao Qi, will enthrall Peking opera lovers. Renowned local Peking opera artist, Tian Ping, the co-creative director for this concert, will play the laodan and take centrestage with the Tianjin Municipal Youth Peking Opera Troupe.
Programmes are different on both nights. The first night, 7 June (Friday), will feature music of revolutionary Peking opera classics including Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, Azalea Mountain, The Legend of the Red Lantern and Shajia Village. Tsung Yeh will play the piano accompaniment for There are Red Hearts and The Poor Man’s Child Shares the Household Burden from The Legend of the Red Lantern. Jinghu musician, He Jian, will present popular Peking Opera tune Night Thoughts.
The second night, 8 June (Saturday), would stage traditional Peking opera classics including Silang Visits His Mother, The Orphan of Zhao and Yu Tang Chun. A 20-minute opera highlights Chi Sang Zhen will also be performed by Meng Guang Lu and Tian Ping, telling you the story of Judge Bao and his sister-in-law.
