Singapore, 27 May 2013 (Monday) – Yan Hui Chang, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO), will return to conduct the SCO on 5 & 6 July 2013. This is a much-awaited concert 8 years on, since his last visit to conduct SCO in 2005.
With 30 years of experience in conducting, Yan Hui Chang is one of the conducting maestros in the Chinese orchestra scene. His conducting style has been described as “mellifluous and coherent” and with “musical precision and charm”. After he graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1983, he was appointed the Principal Conductor cum Artistic Director of the Chinese National Orchestra of China. In 1992, he moved to Singapore and was the Music Director of Naxos (Singapore) Pte Ltd. In 1997, he moved on to join the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Under his leadership, Yan Hui Chang brought HKCO to new artistic heights and achieved numerous milestones. Recently this year, he was appointed the Principal Guest Conductor of the Taiwan National Chinese Orchestra. Yan Hui Chang was conferred the title of National Class One Conductor at the 1st Professional Appraisal of China in 1987. In Singapore, he was awarded the “Cultural Medallion” by the National Arts Council Singapore in 2001.
In this concert, Yan Hui Chang planned a programme spanning a wide array of works, exhibiting special musical content and style. In his appreciation to local composers’ contributions to the development of Chinese music in Singapore, local composer Phoon Yew Tian’s Overture – Step Up and Up, will be the opening piece. SCO’s concertmaster Li Bao Shun will take centrestage in Liu Wen Jin’s The Soul of the Snow Mountain – a piece specially selected for Li Bao Shun to give full play to showcase performance techniques and possibility on the erhu. Guanzi musician Han Lei will take on Zhao Ji Ping’s The Silk Road Fantasia Suite, to mesmerize the audience with the beauty and mystery of the Silk Road through beautiful sounds of the guanzi. This is one of Yan Hui Chang’s favorite pieces and which he has conducted numerous times. Han Lei is also highly praised guanzi musician by the composer hence, the best guanzi musician to perform this piece. The revised version of Liu Xing’s Folk Symphony No. 3 will also world premiere in this concert. Renowned Hong Kong composer Doming Lam’s Qiu Jue will also be performed.
Since his last collaboration with the SCO, Yan Hui Chang shared that he is very excited and looks forward to meet his old friends and make new friends in the orchestra.
