Singapore, 12 June 2013 (Wednesday) – The Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) will present their annual concert to celebrate its 10th anniversary under the baton of SYCO conductor Quek Ling Kiong and guest conductor Huang Xiao Fei.

The concert starts with local young composer Wang Chen Wei’s composition, specially composed for SYCO’s 10 anniversary – We Soar. This is a majestic and passionate piece that expresses the aspirations and determination of the young musicians to pursue dreams and fly towards greater heights. The SYCO will also thrill the audience with renowned composer Lo Leung Fai’s masterpiece – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – that paints the beautiful scenery of four seasons.

Guest conductor Huang Xiao Fei will conduct the second-half of the concert. Huang Xiao Fei is a renowned conductor and composer in China and professor at the China Conservatory of Music. She will lead the SYCO to perform her composition The Goddess in the Moon and Mao Yuan’s Joyous New Year. SYCO’s Roy Yuen Ze Min will perform in Huang Xiao Fei’s guzheng concerto The Dance of Dunhuang while Joyce Poh Hui Bing will perform dizi concerto Gada Meilin Capriccio. Roy is currently pursuing his studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS), majoring in Geography at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He has won the second prize at the Guzheng Open Category in the National Chinese Music Competition 2012. Joyce joined SYCO since 2004 and is currently its dizi sectional principal. She has won the first prize at the Dizi Open Category in the National Chinese Music Competition 2008.

SYCO is a group of highly talented young musicians of age 11 to 26 years old. SYCO is under the management of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) since 2003 and has held its premiere concert in 2004. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and SCO, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. Only the finest musicians, through auditions, are chosen to be members of SYCO. In 2012, twelve SYCO members have won awards at the National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council. As part of SYCO’s achievement, SYCO is proud to be invited to perform at the Taiwan Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival on 17 July 2013.
