Singapore, 12 July 2013 (Friday) – Li Biao, a superstar in the global percussion world, will drum up rhythms at the gala concert of SCO’s 2013-2014 concert season! SCO Gala: Drum You Up – Li Biao & SCO, will be presented on 16 and 17 August 2013 at the SCO Concert Hall. SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh conducts.

The concert will have a roaring kickstart with Chew Hee Chiat’s Let The Thunder Drum Roll VII. Young percussionists from the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra, School of the Arts Singapore, Hwa Chong Junior College, Nanyang Polytechnic, Nanyang Girls’ High School and Tao Nan School will perform with SCO to drum up an auspicious concert season for SCO.

International renowned percussionist, Li Biao, will debut with SCO, to perform a piece composed by him and Meng Ke, Symphonic Poem: Dance of the Century. This piece is arranged by Simon Kong Su Leong for this concert. This piece consists of three movements: Celebration, Dream of Autumn and The Dance of Era, which concluded the uniqueness and multicultural background of percussion music across five continents. The finale for this concert would be a famous percussion piece by Xu Chang Jun, Dragon Dance, which Li Biao will play with the SCO’s percussion section! The concert will also present Zhao Ji Ping’s famous composition The Family Legend and Chen Ning-chi’s Charms of City Suite.

Critically acclaimed by the European media, Li Biao has been described as a “glorious performer”, “indescribable in his awesome skills”, with his “technical prowess beyond imagination” stunning audiences around the world. He is well-known as an exceptional solo percussionist in the contemporary era by virtue of his extraordinary musicality of the percussion instruments as well as his unique demeanor. He was appointed the professor of the Central Conservatory of Music in 2003 and professor of the prestigious Hochschule für Musik “Hanns-Eisler” in 2006. He was the winner at the first Debrecen Percussion Competition, becoming the first Chinese who won the award. In 2008, Li Biao received the “National Spirit Achiever Award” from Mercedes-Benz, AMG and City Magazine. In 2009, he was awarded the “Men of Taste and Success 2009” by Men’s Bazaar. Li Biao gave a great number of solo recitals during various music festivals, cooperated with renowned orchestras and performed in more than 70 countries. In 2011, Li Biao began appearing on the stage as a conductor, working with symphony orchestras in Europe and China. In 2012, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra appointed Li Biao as the Artist-in-Residence and Conductor.

Yangzheng Foundation has been supportive of promoting Chinese arts and culture. The Foundation sponsored 16 August’s concert to kick-start the SCO-Yangzheng Foundation Young Audience Development Series, to create a platform for music and cultural appreciation for students.
