Singapore, 30 October 2013 (Wednesday) – Teochew is one of the main Chinese dialect group in the Chinese community in Singapore. SCO stages an annual concert with a dialect theme and this year, SCO will present two nights of Tunes of Teochew on 22 and 23 November 2013. This concert features well-known Teochew artistes from Shantou, China, and Singapore’s Nam Hwa Opera. SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh conducts.
Chen Zuo Hui, Teochew gongs and drums artiste, first class national musician and president of the Guangdong Chinese Orchestra, will perform signature Teochew gongs and drums pieces – Spring Filled Fishing Harbour, Xi Le Deng Lou and Zou Hang’s Buddha Jumps Over The Wall. SCO will also present Wu Dian Xiang’s Zhong Yi Lie and Wang Dan Hong’s The Clouds, The Mountains and The Distant Geese.
The second-half of the concert will feature top Teochew opera actors from Shantou – Sun Xiao Hua (huadan) and Lin Chu Fa (xiaosheng) – will take centrestage with Nam Hwa Opera’s Doreen Low (huadan), Chua Ai Peck (xiaosheng), Tan Kok Lye (laosheng) and Goh Hui Ling (qingyi), to perform a string of Teochew opera classics. Musicians from Nan Hwa Opera – Cai Jian Chen (sigu), Huang Zhuang Mao (touxian), Liu Chu Yue (yehu), Zhao Ze Hua (tihu) and Lin Yi Shu (yangqing) will also share the stage with SCO.
Tsung Yeh shared, “SCO has worked in many musical genres and collaborated across different media with a host of distinguished artists. In the recent years, we have presented concert with the themes of Hokkien, Hakka, Cantonese and Peking operas. Those concerts were very well-received! This year, it’s Teochew and we hope everyone, especially the Teochew community, will enjoy this very special Teochew opera concert.”
