Singapore, 22 January 2014 (Wednesday) – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) today announced that Deutsche Bank has committed to a third year of sponsorship of the SCO, with a bigger vision to create a series of music programmes for beneficiaries in 2014.
Deutsche Bank will provide funding for four music programmes which will be managed by SCO. The programmes include a series of two lunchtime concerts, a music education programme, a music therapy programme and a concert at the SCO Concert Hall.
Free lunchtime concerts will be held on 28 January 2014 and 17 June 2014 at One Raffles Quay to provide outreach opportunities to people working in the area. The education programme, named the Deutsche Bank-SCO ‘Born to Be’ Programme, will provide musical education for physically-challenged potential young musicians. 17-year-old visually handicapped erhu player Stephanie Ow will be the first beneficiary to receive professional music training from SCO under the programme. Stephanie, who is blind in both eyes from Retinal Dystrophy, performed at SCO’s 2013 Mother’s Day Concert conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong. Stephanie also successfully auditioned for the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra this year.
Philip Lee, Vice Chairman, South East Asia and Chief Country Officer, Singapore at Deutsche Bank, said, “We are very proud to extend our sponsorship of SCO into a third year. At Deutsche Bank, we believe that enabling talent fosters innovation and growth: by investing in the SCO and its programmes, we are contributing to the wellbeing of Singapore society of which we are a part.”
The music therapy programme is adapted from the success of a pilot music therapy programme in 2011, which motivated SCO to reach out to youths with special needs. Through the programme, SCO aspires to improve the socio-emotional development and communication skills of these youths. A selected group of SCO musicians will work with the youths directly, to provide guidance to teach them rhythm and play percussion instruments.
Mr Terence Ho, SCO’s General Manager, said, “Deutsche Bank’s passion for the arts and sponsorship to SCO is one of the best CSR programs to bring music, corporate and charity together. We salute Deutsche Bank’s initiative and efforts.”
The concert venue for the Deutsche Bank-SCO Lunchtime Concert Series is sponsored by Raffles Quay Asset Management, manager for One Raffles Quay and Marina Bay Financial Centre. Warren Bishop, Chief Executive Officer, Raffles Quay Asset Management (RQAM), said, “We are delighted to be the venue sponsor of the Deutsche Bank-SCO Lunchtime Concert Series for the third year. By supporting this initiative, we hope to inspire appreciation of the arts amongst the business community as well as to contribute to the growth of Singapore’s arts scene.”
The sponsorship will be officially launched at the Deutsche Bank-SCO Lunchtime Concert on 28 January 2014 (Tuesday), 12.45pm, at One Raffles Quay South Tower Lobby. The event will be graced by Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Mr Lawrence Wong.
