Singapore, 24 January 2014 (Friday) – Renowned composer Wang Li Ping’s music and songs for 1987’s famous television series adaption of the literary classic “Dream of the Red Mansions” were widely acclaimed by both local and international viewers. Under the baton of SCO Guest Conductor Chair, Ku Pao-wen, SCO will present this masterpiece at Spring Dreams of The Red Mansion concert, held on 28 February and 1 March 2014 at SCO Concert Hall.
Dream of the Red Mansions Suite is a rearrangement based on the original music for the television series. Beautiful melodious, gentle and touching, passionate and expressive, this expertly crafted work exudes a rich yet fresh ethnic flavor. In this concert, SCO will perform six parts from the suite – The Dream of the Red Mansions Overture, Song of Purple Caltrops, Song of Red Love Beans, Song of Qingwen, Grief in Vain and Lamenting Caltrops. Acclaimed young vocalist from Shanghai, Chen Si, will use the vocal techniques and styles of folk-singing to perform the songs, showcasing the essence and spirit of the depicted characters.
Ku Pao-wen will also conduct pieces rich in regional flavor including Sun Zhong Sheng’s Huang Mei Overture, Zhang Ding He’s Spring Trees and Sunset Clouds and Liu Wen Jin’s Unforgettable Water-Splashing Festival. SCO yangqin principal, Qu Jian Qing will present yangqin concerto – Love Song of Tianshan composed by Kuan Nai-chung while dizi musician Lim Sin Yeo will perform bamboo flute concerto – Cloud. Cloud was composed by Liu Wen Jin in April 2012 which was the last major work composed by this well-respected composer before he died in 2013. Audience will definitely be mesmerized by its graceful rhythm and moving melodies.
Yangzheng Foundation has been supportive of promoting Chinese arts and culture. This is the third concert under the SCO-Yangzheng Foundation Young Audience Development Series. SCO-Yangzheng Foundation Young Audience Development Series create a platform for music and cultural appreciation for students.
