Singapore, 24 February 2014 (Monday) – To strengthen awareness and appreciation of Chinese music among fellow Singaporeans, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) gathers all Chinese music lovers to perform together at the newly-built National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub on 28 June 2014. This event will also attempt to break the Singapore Book of Records for the largest Chinese orchestra.

Our People, Our Music 2014 concert has attracted 4,919 participants, including 3,745 orchestral members and 1,174 choir members. The list of participating groups are stated on Our People Our Music’s official website at www.opom.sg.

Choreographed by SCO’s Music Director, Tsung Yeh, the concert programme is made up of pieces that represent “Nostalgia”, “Dream”, “Drive”, “Future”, “Energy” and “PossibiCity” to showcase the passion and best wishes of the people for Singapore. The concert will open with Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, Op 30. Kuan Nai-chung’s Blue Memories – Teresa Teng Golden Hits Medley will bring you back to the sweet old times. Be wowed by Vincent Ng’s martial arts performance as he performs with live music by the mega orchestra in the theme song from movie “Once Upon A Time in China” – A Man Should Stand Strong. SCO’s Young Assistant Conductor-in-Resident, Moses Gay, will lead the mega erhu ensemble to challenge the Guinness World Records and Singapore Book of Records for the largest erhu ensemble in Huang Hai Huai’s Horse Racing, with piano accompaniment by young Singaporean pianist Clarence Lee.

10-year-old Chen Xinyu, first prize winner of Pipa Junior Category in the National Chinese Music Competition 2012, will perform Wu Si Man Jiang’s Spring at Tianshan. Under the baton of SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, a commissioned work for this concertcomposed by Quek Ling Kiong and Phang Kok Jun, Power Singapura!, will attempt to break the Guinness World Records and Singapore Book of Records for the largest Chinese drum ensemble. Another commissioned work by established local composer Phoon Yew Tien, Variations on Singapura, will paint a picture of our beautiful country. The finale piece is a song that every Singaporean can sing-along – theme song for 1998’s National Day Parade – Home. The composer, Dick Lee, will sing live with the mega orchestra, to lead the 30,000 audience  to the climatic moment of the concert theme “Our Home – Singapore!”.

Our People Our Music 2014 is organized by SCO and supported by the National Arts Council, Singapore Sports Council, Singapore Sports Hub, Ministry of Education and PAssion Arts. SCO Patron, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, will grace this momentous event as the Guest-of-Honour.

Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is Singapore’s only professional Chinese orchestra.
