Singapore, 28 February 2014 (Friday) – The Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) is set to dazzle in their highly anticipated annual combined concert with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) – Dauntless Spirit 2014!

SYCO will perform under the baton of three conductors: SCO and SYCO Music Director – Tsung Yeh, SCO Resident Conductor – Quek Ling Kiong and SCO Young Assistant Conductor-in-Residence – Moses Gay. This concert will open with Xu Jing Xin and Chen Da Wei’s Flying Asparas, bringing the audience into a picturesque world of gods and goddesses with exquisite melodies. SYCO will bring you to experience Liu Xi Jin’s Journey of Life – a music piece that uses a unique expression to depict the birth, the movements of the indomitable and splendid life. They will also tell you The Legend of the Dragon – composed by Chen Ning Chi, showcasing the strength of dragon and the Chinese spirit.

Two outstanding SYCO members – Ho Bing Hong and Megan Tan – will star as soloists in two concertos with SCO. Under the baton of Moses Gay, Ho Bing Hong will present Guan Ming’s dizi concerto Lan Hua Hua, while Megan Tan will play the 3rd movement of Liu Xing’s zhongruan concerto Reminiscences of Yunnan. 20-year-old Ho Bing Hong is currently the SYCO’s dizi principal. He was awarded the first prize in the Junior, Youth and Open Dizi categories in the biennial National Chinese Music Competition organised by the National Arts Council. Megan Tan is currently the SYCO’s ruan and liuqin principal and ruan musician in the Singapore Ruan Xian Chamber Ensemble. She has won the first prize at the Zhongruan Junior Category in the National Chinese Music Competition 2008 and Zhongruan Youth Category in the National Chinese Music Competition 2012.

The finale will be a massive combined orchestra of the SYCO and the SCO in Chen Ning Chi’s Hometown and Local Lands. Watch sparks fly in this combined teacher-student performance!

SYCO is a group of highly talented young musicians of age 11 to 26 years old. SYCO is under the management of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) since 2003 and has held its premiere concert in 2004. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and SCO, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. Only the finest musicians, through auditions, are chosen to be members of SYCO. In 2012, twelve SYCO members have won awards at the National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council. As part of SYCO’s achievement, SYCO was invited to perform at the Taiwan Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival on 17 July 2013.
