Singapore, 18 March 2014 (Tuesday) – If the Chinese orchestra doesn’t ring a chord with you, this novice’s guide to the Chinese orchestra is just for you! SCO’s popular Casual Classical concert is back again! SCO collaborates with Symphony 92.4FM in this concert on 12 April 2014, 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. This concert will be conducted by Music Director Tsung Yeh and hosted by Symphony 92.4FM’s DJ, Kiat Goh.

Be intrigued by the beauty of the western flute and the Chinese dizi in this musical dialogue of the East and West. Nikolai Song, 11-year-old flute prodigy and Grand Prize winner of Symphony 92.4FM’s Young Talents Project 2013, will debut with the SCO in George Hue’s Fantasie for Flute and Orchestra. This is also Nikolai’s first public concert since his win at the Young Talents Project last year. SCO’s dizi musician, Zeng Zhi, will showcase Yang Qing’s Wilderness, expressing the complicated feelings of pain and suffering, joy and happiness, loss and yearning, and the unremitting pursuit of all the beautiful things present within one’s life. Zeng Zhi and Nikolai will also perform together in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee and George Telemann’s Concerto in A minor for Two Flutes.

In the second half of the concert, Symphony 92.4FM DJ, Kiat Goh, will introduce you to the sections of the Chinese orchestra through Phoon Yew Tien’s A Novice Guide to the Chinese Orchestra. He will also showcase his vocal prowess in Richard Rodgers’ Some Enchanted Evening and Henry Mancini’s Moon River. SCO will also perform a variety of western musical pieces with a Chinese orchestra twist, including Antonín Dvořák’s Humoresque No. 7, Op. 101 and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Overture, bringing out new flavors to classic pieces.

Come experience the beauty and world of possibilities of the Chinese orchestra with SCO in this uniquely tailored one-night only concert!
