Singapore, 20 June 2014 (Friday) – The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will stage Our People Our Music 2014 on 28 June 2014, Saturday, 7.30pm at National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub. Under the baton of SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh, over 5,000 participants (comprising of 3,736 orchestra members and 1,297 choir members), from 127 performing groups, will present a series of pieces to showcase the passion and best wishes of the people for Singapore.

This concert will attempt to break the Guinness World Records (for the Largest Chinese Drum Ensemble) and 3 Singapore Book of Records (for the Largest Chinese Orchestra Performance, the Largest Erhu Ensemble and the Largest Chinese Drum Ensemble). SCO Patron, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mrs Lee, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and Second Minister for Ministry of Communications and Information – Mr Lawrence Wong, and Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Second Minister for Foreign Affair – Ms Grace Fu, will grace this momentous event as the Guest-of-Honour.

Hosted by renowned local host Qiqi and Jimmy T, the concert will present 8 pieces, including Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30, Kuan Nai-chung’s Blue Memories – Teresa Teng Golden Hits Medley, a commissioned work by established local composer Phoon Yew Tien, Variations on Singapura and more. Be wowed by Vincent Ng’s martial arts performance as he performs with live music by the mega orchestra in the theme song from movie “Once Upon A Time in China” – A Man Should Stand Strong. Dick Lee will sing live with the mega orchestra in theme song for 1998’s National Day Parade – Home , to lead the audience to the climactic moment of the concert theme “Our Home – Singapore!”. 10-year-old Chen Xinyu, first prize winner of Pipa Junior Category in the National Chinese Music Competition 2012, will perform Wu Si Man Jiang’s Spring at Tianshan . 

SCO’s Young Assistant Conductor-in-Resident, Moses Gay, will lead the mega erhu ensemble to challenge the Singapore Book of Records for the largest erhu ensemble in Huang Hai Huai’s Horse Racing , with piano accompaniment by young Singaporean pianist Clarence Lee. Led by SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, all of the performers will play Chinese drums in Power Singapura! , a commissioned work composed by Quek Ling Kiong and Phang Kok Jun. With this piece, we will to attempt to break the Guinness World Records and Singapore Book of Record for the largest Chinese drum ensemble.  

Our People Our Music aims to bring together Chinese orchestra groups in Singapore, to re-ignite and sustain former orchestra players’ interest and passion in music; to showcase and develop promising orchestra talents and is an early tribute to Singapore’s 50th birthday. This mega concert is possible only with a broad commitment from the community and support from our patron sponsors – Temasek International Pte Ltd , Tote Board and National Arts Council; along with our partners – Singapore Sports Council, Singapore Sports Hub, Ministry of Education, PAssion Arts, Singapore Chinese Music Federation, Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations and Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 
  
As part of the opening celebrations for the newly-built National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub, high traffic volume is expected on 28 June and there will be security screening at the National Stadium. Audience are advised to take public transport, arrive early for security screening and keep belongings to a minimum.
