Singapore, 4 August 2014 (Monday) – World-renowned American jazz band, the Brubecks, are back in Singapore! They will be jazzing up the gala concert of SCO’s 2014-2015 concert season on 15 and 16 August 2014, 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. Gala: The Brubeck Brothers Return will be conducted by SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh.
Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play performed with SCO in June 2009. This year, it would be the debut for The Brubeck Brothers Quartet in Singapore. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet features Chris Brubeck, on the bass and trombone, and Daniel Brubeck, on the drums. Together with guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, they form the renowned dynamic quartet. In 2012, the quartet released their 4th album, Life Times, as a tribute to the late Dave Brubeck, showcasing pieces he composed, repackaged with their creative styles. Life Times was in the top 10 of all jazz CDs receiving the most radio airplay in 2012. The quartet’s style may be rooted in straight-ahead jazz, but their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while integrating the influences of funk, blues, and world music. The group’s creativity, technique, and improvisation can be heard in its uncompromising music, which reflects a dedication to melody, rhythm, culture, and the spontaneous spirit of jazz. The American jazz website All About Jazz, says of the quartet – “it attains that rarefied level where music is both relaxed and expressive, and their joy in its creation is contagious!”
In this concert, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet will share the stage with the SCO to present a series of songs composed by Dave Brubeck – one of the most active and popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds spanning over six decades. Expect to hear My One Bad Habit is Falling in Love – one of Dave Brubeck’s most beautiful and soulful compositions, Mr Broadway – music for a television series “Mr Broadway” in 1964, Jazzanias – was written as a salute to the work of Dave’s oldest son Darius Brubeck who went to South Africa to start the first university-level jazz studies program on the entire continent of Africa, Blue Rondo A La Turk – this was one of the early marriages between jazz and world music where Dave added a western melody, a classical “Rondo” structure and juxtaposed them with good old American Blues to create this musical masterpiece, In Your Own Sweet Way – it is considered a jazz “standard” as almost every professional musician around the world knows and can play this sophisticated song, Unsquare Dance, The Basie Band is Back in Town, and Brandenburg Gate Revisited. They will also play Paul Desmond’s Take Five. Made famous by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, this piece is known all over the world as a groundbreaking composition in 5/4 time.
Other than works by Dave Brubeck, the orchestra will also present George Gershwin’s popular Strike Up the Band, Leroy Anderson’s Jazz Pizzicato and Eric Watson’s Mahjong Kakis. Don’t miss this captivating fusion of jazz and Chinese orchestra music in SCO Gala: Return of the Brubeck! You will be awed!
