Singapore, 9 September 2014 (Tuesday) – The Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) is calling for young musicians! Application is now open until 15 October 2014. Singaporeans, permanent residents and students studying in Singapore who are between the age of 11 and 26 years old in 2015 and play Chinese orchestral instruments are welcome to apply.
SYCO is under the management of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) since 2003 and has held its premiere concert in 2004. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and SCO, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. SCO’s Music Director Tsung Yeh helms the role of the SYCO’s Music Director, together with SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong and Assistant Conductor Moses Gay as its Conductor. The outstanding team of instrumental tutors made up of SCO musicians coaches and grooms the SYCO musicians. It gives talented young musicians the opportunities to learn from some of the best music talents in SCO and experience high quality professional music education and training. To date, three former SYCO musicians have made music their career through passing the audition to join SCO as a full-time professional Chinese orchestra musician.
Besides earning CCA points under the LEAPS scheme, SYCO members also get exclusive opportunities to attend music camps, master classes and workshops conducted by maestros and guest artistes. They get various performances opportunities to enhance their musical exposure. In 2005 and 2007, selected SYCO members have participated in the Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. The orchestra was also invited to perform at the Tainan International Qixi Art Festival in July 2006 and perform at the Taiwan Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival in July 2013. In 2014, SYCO has successfully staged two concerts – SYCO & SCO Annual Concert: Dauntless Spirit 2014and SYCO Annual Concert: Musical Landscape for All Seasons in March and July. Recently, SYCO performed at Moonfest organized by Esplanade.
SYCO is recruiting musicians for the following instruments:
(1) Bowed strings:
Gaohu, Erhu, Zhonghu, Cello, Double Bass
(2) Plucked strings:
Pipa, Liuqin, Guzheng, Zhongruan, Daruan, Sanxian cum Ruan
(3) Wind:
Guan, Qudi, Bangdi, Gaoyin Sheng, Zhongyin Sheng, Diyin Sheng, Gaoyin Suona, Zhongyin Suona, Cizhongyin Suona, Diyin Suona
(4) Percussion
