Singapore, 13 October 2014 (Monday) – Zhang Lie, music director and principal director of Guangdong National Orchestra, will conduct the SCO at Stories and Legends concert on 8 November 2014, at SCO Concert Hall.
Zhang Lie is a first class national conductor. He is also a member of Chinese Musicians Association, committee member of China National Orchestra Society, Vice President of China Conductor Committee. His conducting is precise and exquisite. He can always grasp the inner soul of the music and present it through innovative ways. A British critic commented that “Zhang Lie is the soul of a concert who creates the atmosphere of excitement. He possesses a strong sense of proportion while retaining a degree of unfettered grace……” In this concert, Zhang Lie will conduct seven masterpieces of varying styles including joyous Festive Overture as its opening, Chang Ping’s Yue Feng, second and sixth movement of Zhao Ji Ping’s masterpiece – Symphonic Suite: Qiao’s Grand Courtyard, Guan Xia’s Symphonic Fantasia: Farewell, My Concubine (Singapore premiere), Han Lan Kui’s The Story of Crescent Spring, the world premiere of young Singaporean composer Phang Kok Jun’s Distant Bells and dizi concerto Bound for the Western Pass.
Renowned vocalist from China, Cui Rui, will perform in Symphonic Suite: Qiao’s Grand Courtyard and Symphonic Fantasia: Farewell, My Concubine. Audience will definitely be charmed by Cui Rui’s crystal vocals while reminisce the story of famous television drama series “Qiao’s Grand Courtyard” and the touching love story of the King of Western Chu, Xiang Yu and his beloved concubine Yu Ji.
SCO dizi principal, Yin Zhi Yang and daruan musician Jing Po will be the soloist for dizi concerto Bound for the Western and Phang Kok Jun’s Distant Bells respectively. Yin Zhi Yang joined SCO in 1996. He received an Outstanding Performance Award at the China National Chinese Music Competition Shan Cheng Cup in 1989 and came in First at the China Central Song and Dance Troupe Audition in 1992. His signature rendition of Divine Melody at the Singapore Arts Festival and London’s Barbican Centre remains talked about today in music circles. In 2008, he performed Three Variations of the Parting at Yangguan as a soloist in a concert at The Sage Gateshead arts centre in the United Kingdom and received good reviews. Jing Po graduated from the China Conservatory of Music in 1997 and joined SCO in 2005. She is able to systematically and comprehensively master the playing techniques of the xiaoruan, zhongruan and daruan. Jing Po was awarded the Outstanding Performance Award in the Ruan (Professional) Category at the Hua Xia International Chinese Instrumental Competition in 1995. In 2002, she recorded a solo album Pao Xiu Luo Lan of ruan-xian pieces for Taiwan’s Poem Culture Corporation.
This would be a beautiful night of traditional Chinese music under the baton of guest conductor Zhang Lie, not to be missed!
