Singapore, 1 December 2014 (Monday) – The 3rd Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) 2015 aims to promote music creativity, stimulate international awareness and to establish a repertoire of Nanyang- and/or Singapore-inspired Chinese orchestra compositions. This competition, supported by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, is part of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s efforts to celebrate Singapore’s golden jubilee with the award-winning Nanyang-themed repertoire.
The competition is open to all nationalities and ages. The closing date for registration is 31 March 2015. All entries must encompass “Nanyang musical elements” or “Nanyang socio-cultural elements” in consideration of Singapore’s heritage trail. Chairman of the panel of adjudicators, SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh, shared, “the competition aims to showcase compositions written with a Nanyang flavour. That means a style or theme relating to Singapore and its neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. That could be a story related to those countries or musical elements such as melody, rhythm, theme or the instrument. It could also include music from South China like Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka or Hainan. We include this in our definition of Nanyang because the Chinese population in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia largely originate from Southern China, provinces like Guangdong”.
Besides cash prizes, winners’ compositions will be proudly world premiered by the SCO at the Prize Presentation Ceremony and Concert on 21 November 2015. Overseas finalists will also be entitled up to SGD500 travel and SGD500 accommodation subsidies. There are two awards exclusively for local composers – the Singaporean Composer Award and Young Singaporean Composer Award.
“The 2 competitions held in 2006 and 2011 have been very successful. The winners have had their works performed by the SCO and several other Chinese orchestras. The composers then become recognised and are receiving many commissions for other works. For example, SICCOC 2006’s 1st prize winner, Eric Watson, has composed various new works for SCO such as The Ceilidh, Mahjong Kaki, Dialogue for Solo Tabla and Chinese Orchestra,” Tsung Yeh shared.
The panel of adjudicators for the preliminary are Gao Ping, John Sharpley and Liu Bin. The panel of adjudicators for the finals are Chen Yi, Chung Yiu-kwong, Ho Chee Kong, Isao Matsushita, Xu Shu Ya and Yii Kah Hoe. SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh is the chairperson.
The preliminary selection will be in August 2015 and finalists will be announced on 20 November 2015. The schedule of events is as below:
