Singapore, 24 February 2015 (Tuesday) – The Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) will present their annual combined concert with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) – Dauntless Spirit 2015 on 21 March, Saturday, 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. Watch sparks fly in this combined teacher-student performance, showcasing the spirit of “Chinese music succession”!
SYCO will perform under the baton of three conductors: SCO and SYCO Music Director Tsung Yeh, SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong and SCO Assistant Conductor Moses Gay. This year, they will challenge Dianxi Folk Tunes, a three-movement work by Guo Wen Jing that portrays the lives of the Yunnan people and renowned composer Liu Wen Jin’s famous Unforgettable Water Splashing Festival. There will also be a massive combined orchestra of the SYCO and the SCO in local young composer, Wang Chen Wei’s Confluence, which depicts Singapore’s racial harmony through the combined use of Malay and Indian musical styles, and Eric Watson’s The Ceilidh which is inspired from Scottish and Irish folk songs.
Two outstanding SYCO members – Chia Wei Jian and Yu Man – will star as soloists in two concertos with SCO. Chia Wei Jian will perform Rao Yu Yan’s zhongruan concerto Love of the Han Pipa, while Yu Man will play Zhao Ji Ping’s pipa concerto Blessing. Wei Jian and Yu Man are currently students of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (School of Music). They are also the first prize winners of the National Chinese Music Competition organised by the National Arts Council (NAC). Wei Jian was the first prize winner of the Zhongruan Open Category in 2012 while Yu Man was the first prize winner of the Pipa Open Category in 2014.
SYCO is a group of highly talented young musicians of age 11 to 26 years old. SYCO is under the management of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) since 2003 and has held its premiere concert in 2004. From June 2009, under a collaboration of the Ministry of Education and SCO, SYCO was elevated to the status of National Project of Excellence (NPOE), with the vision to nurture potential talents and groom them to be the future pillars of Singapore’s Chinese orchestral music scene. Only the finest musicians, through auditions, are chosen to be members of SYCO. In 2012, twelve SYCO members have won awards at the National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council. As part of SYCO’s achievement, SYCO was invited to perform at the Taiwan Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival on 17 July 2013.
