Singapore, 9 June 2015 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) announced 6 exciting months of concerts to celebrate SG50 on 9 June 2015 (Tuesday) at the Singapore Conference Hall. SCO Music Director Tsung Yeh and Executive Director Terence Ho revealed the list of spectacular concerts and SCO’s promotion for SG50.
SCO Celebrates SG50
A smorgasbord of exciting works in praise of Singapore’s golden jubilee with the theme “SCO Celebrates SG50” awaits you in the new season! SCO opens the season with a special concert featuring local artistes and talents such as Lim Kay Tong, Robert Fernando, MICappella and Serene Koh on 3 July 2015 (Friday), 7.30pm at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The commemoration continues on 8 August where SCO will celebrate amidst fireworks at Singapore’s iconic Marina Bay Sands Waterfront Promenade with a splendid concert as part of National Day celebrations!
Expect internationally-renowned artistes including percussionist dame Evelyn Glennie, erhu virtuoso Yu Hong Mei, award-winning pianist Sun Yingdi and veteran Taiwanese conductor Chen Tscheng-Hsiung. The magnificent masterpieces by eminent Chinese composer Xian Xing Hai – Yellow River Cantata and Yellow River Piano Concerto will be showcased on 14 & 15 August’s Yellow River! concert.
SCO’s annual favourite will have our Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong and his new-found friend, Sugie Phua explore Singapore’s culinary cultures at the third episode of Voyage to Nanyang – Food Paradise on 6 & 7 November. Assistant conductor Moses Gay will conduct Unforgettable Tunes II, a concert to revisit the best classics of Chinese orchestra pieces on 22 August.
Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC)
After two successful competitions in 2006 and 2011, SICCOC is held for the third time this year. A total of 125 composers from 13 countries worldwide have registered, including Mexico, Korea, Australia and Belgium, with 184 registered compositions. The award presentation and concert for the winning compositions will be held on 21 November. Audience will also get to vote for the “Most Popular Composition” piece. SICCOC is proudly sponsored by SCO patron, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
A symposium with sharing from panel of adjudicators and participated composers will be held on 22 November. There will also be thematic presentation by Professor of Musicology, Shanghai Conservatory of Music – Professor Yang Yandi and Malaysian composer Yii Kah Hoe.
Overseas Concerts
This year, SCO wears the hat as a national cultural ambassador for the arts. It sets off to two overseas concerts in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur with the best of SCO’s repertoire. In Hong Kong, SCO will present the well-reviewed silent film concert, The Goddess featuring actress Ruan Lingyu with SCO on the music accompaniment on 17 October; and on 18 October with internationally renowned tenor Warren Mok and celebrated soprano Wu Bi Xia in the symphonic poem Marco Polo and Princess Blue.
In Kuala Lumpur, SCO will perform at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas on 8 December with a programme of cross-cultural and cross-genre versatility.
SG50 Promotion
Good news to Singapore citizens who are celebrating the jubilee birthday with the nation. Citizens born in 1965 could join as a Friend of SCO at $50 this year, and receive 6 complimentary ticket vouchers worth $360 plus 50% off SCO regular concerts through December 2015.
Music Director Tsung Yeh renews contract with SCO
Tsung Yeh will renew his contract ahead as SCO’s Music Director from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019.
