Singapore, 11 August 2015 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) presents Strumming Heartstrings, a concert showcasing internationally-renowned musicians in collaboration with SCO. Conducted by SCO Music Director, Tsung Yeh, this concert features percussionist Evelyn Glennie, erhu musician Yu Hong Mei and SCO guanzi musician Han Lei. This concert will be held on 4 & 5 September (Friday & Saturday), 8pm at SCO Concert Hall.
The concert features well-known Chinese composer Liu Chang Yuan’s compositions including his award winning piece, Carnival Dance. This piece depicts the summoning of sorcerers through a dance ritual under the bright full moon represented by its fast and jovial beat. Liu Chang Yuan’s Bright Moon over the Ocean will world premiere in this concert and performed by guanzi musician Han Lei.
Central Conservatory of Music’s Head of Folk Music Department, Yu Hong Mei, will perform Liu Chang Yuan’s erhu concerto Dream Interpretation. This piece depicts the nine stages of dream that people goes through in deep sleep. When viewed from another perspective, the composer is trying to portray the varying emotions that people experience in their life through the use of dream. With feelings of happiness, anger, frustration, sorrow and anticipation blend into one music piece, audience will experience the different aspects of life through Yu Hong Mei’s touching rendition.
Renowned percussionist dame Evelyn Glennie returns to collaborate with SCO for the third time to perform The Shaman. Specially composed for her by composer Vincent Ho, it has been readapted by Malaysian composer Simon Kong Su Leong to the Chinese orchestra version that audience will get to hear in this concert. Shaman refers to someone who behaves as the connection between the natural and supernatural world with spiritual healing powers which the composer wish to express that Evelyn posses the same healing power with the music she plays. With a wide use of percussion instruments, it will be a challenge to the conductor and orchestra in coordinating the harmonies of all instruments. Evelyn’s passionate rendition of The Shaman together with the strong rhythmic beat of the piece, audience will be left immersed in the mystical world of the sorcerers.
