Singapore, 7 January 2016 (Thursday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will kickstart 2016 with two free outdoor concerts in January. On 16 January 2016, SCO will be at Toa Payoh HDB Hub Mall to present its Community Concert titled Love at Toa Payoh. This concert is part of the National Arts Council’s Arts in Your Neighbourhood programme, an initiative under Arts for All, to promote self-expression, creativity and bonding through the arts by bringing it to where people live, work and play. SCO’s popular Music Oasis concert series will be held on 23 January 2016 at Gardens by the Bay’s Supertree Grove. Admissions to both concerts are free.
SCO Community Concert: Love at Toa Payoh
Conducted by SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, the audience can enjoy renditions of Chinese New Year pieces including Xi Yang Yang, Spring Festival Overture, Nocturnal Peace and Dancing of Golden Snake to usher in the festive season. A quiz segment will also be conducted to let the audience learn more about the origins of these festive pieces.
Two SCO musicians who live in Toa Payoh will perform two concertos respectively with the orchestra. Cizhongyin suona musician Boo Chin Kiah will play on the gourd flute to perform Love Song of Dai Village, while pipa musician Zhang Yin will perform Spring at Tianshan.
Audience can get to enjoy Singaporean Chinese folk songs or xinyao (新谣) composed by renowned local xinyao composer Liang Wern Fook. These pieces will bring the audience back to the 1980s and 1990s when xinyao was famous. Audience can join in the sing-along at the finale performance of familiar local tune, Voices from the Heart (小人物的心声).
The SCO Community Series serves to bring music to your neighbourhood. This popular free concert series reflects SCO’s vision as a people’s orchestra, which aims to bring high standard performances to the community.
