Singapore, 12 February 2016 (Friday) – Internationally renowned classical music conductor Tang Muhai will debut and conduct the SCO in Dazzling Strings – Tang Muhai and SCO concert, to be held on 5 March 2016 (Saturday), 8pm at SCO Concert Hall. This concert will also feature his twelve-year-old daughter violinist Susan Tang and SCO’s erhu II principal, Zhu Lin.
Tang Muhai joined the 1983 Herbert Von Karajan Conducting Competition and honed with skills with the late Austrian maestro during his term with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In this concert, he will conduct SCO to preform Guo Wen Jing’s Dianxi Folk Tunes Dianxi Folk Tunes expresses the scenery, culture of Dianxi and the close relationships of its people. The piece consists of three movements – A Va Mountain, Jino Dance and Sacrifices – Fire –Spirits.
SCO will also perform the second prize award-winning composition from 2011’s Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestra Composition – Stephen Yip’s Nine Actors. This piece uses nine instruments to portray the nine different characters in traditional Chinese opera. SCO’s erhu II principal, Zhu Lin will also perform Qi Hao Di’s erhu concerto Dazzle of Fantasy.
Tang Muhai’s daughter, Susan Tang, started playing the violin from the age of 5. Under the tutelage of Zürich Opera House concertmaster, Robert Bokor and China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra concertmaster Wang Xiaoming, she performed with Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of seven. During her concert in Europe on May 2013, she performed with the Arpeggione Chamber Orchestra of Austria and received rave reviews. She will be performing the evergreen violin concerto Butterfly Lovers in this concert. Composed by He Zhan Hao and Chen Gang, audience can enjoy this unique father-and-daughter performance of this piece inspired from the famous Chinese folktale Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.
