Singapore, 24 February 2016 (Wednesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) will be conducting a composer workshop on 14 March 2016 (Monday) at the Singapore Conference Hall. This one-day composer workshop will comprise of a score reading session in the morning followed by a sharing session in the afternoon.
From 9am to 1pm, a score reading session will be held at the SCO Concert Hall where selected compositions will be performed by SCO under the baton of SCO music director Tsung Yeh. The participating composers have received tutelage from local composer and SCO composer-in-residence, Mr Phoon Yew Tien. Phoon Yew Tien is a renowned local composer whose works have been performed worldwide. In 1996 he was awarded the Cultural Medallion, the highest award given in the field of the arts in Singapore. In 2003, he was the composer-in-residence for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and was appointed the composer-in-residence for SCO since 2014.
A sharing session will commence from 1.45pm to 4.45pm at Singapore Conference Hall Exhibition Hall. Music Director Tsung Yeh, Phoon Yew Tien and selected SCO sectional principals and musicians will provide feedback and composers will share on their respective compositions. The sharing session will be conducted in Mandarin.
Through the workshop, SCO hopes to provide opportunities for aspiring composers to learn and experience orchestra composition.
