Singapore, 8 April 2016 (Friday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s annual Mother’s Day Concert is one of SCO’s well-received branded concerts. This year, SCO will feature Hong Kong-based Singaporean singer-songwriter Hanjin Tan who will sing with SCO under the baton of Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong. SCO Mother’s Day Concert – A Gift to Mum will be held on 7 May 2016 (Saturday), 8pm at SCO Concert Hall.
Local composer Sim Boon Yew’s re-arrangement of Lullabies is a medley of lullabies from all around the world. This medley would trigger memories of audience’s childhood with its familiar tunes. Lo Leung Fai’s Memories of Youth portrays the innocence and excitement of youth through its lively tunes. This piece is filled with the atmosphere of children at play and concludes on a sweet note which is filled with the recollection of childhood.
Renowned composer Gu Guan Ren’s Charms of Jiangnan will be performed by SCO’s dizi principal Yin Zhi Yang, erhu associate principal Ling Hock Siang and guzheng musician Xu Hui. This piece is brimming with flavours of Jiangnan and illustrates the living culture of Jiangnan water village. Local composer and SCO composer-in-residence Phoon Yew Tien’s Rhapsody on Dinuhua is based on the ancient tune Zhuang Tai Qiu Si (Autumn Thoughts at the Dressing Table) and is inspired from a famous Cantonese opera tune which was very popular in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia in the sixties. SCO yangqing principal Qu Jian Qing will perform this popular piece with SCO. Taiwanese singer Luo Dayou’s famous songs including Childhood (童年), Flower of the Sea (海上花), Song of the Boat (船歌), The Orphan of Asia (亚细亚的孤儿), The Dream Chaser (追梦人) and My Darling (心肝宝贝) will be performed by SCO in the medley, Love Song 2016.
Hong Kong-based Singaporean singer-songwriter Hanjin Tan is a household name in Hong Kong with his role as a singer, music producer and actor. In his 20 years of career, he has collaborated with Jacky Cheung, Coco Lee, Christina Aguilera, Rain, Karen Mok, Eason Chan, Joey Yung, Jay Chou, Andy Lau, Alan Tam, Tony Leung, Wang Lee-Hom, Sammi Cheng, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. He successfully held his concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in 2012. Hanjin Tan’s supporting role in Bruce Lee, My Brother earned him the Best New Performer in Hong Kong Academy Award 2011. In his first collaboration with SCO, he will sing songs including Marry Me, Wo Men Dou You Cuo (我们都有错), Yi Bu Yi Bu Ai (一步一步爱) and Zhan Qi Lai (站起来).
