Singapore, 7 June 2016 (Tuesday) – Sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Gift of Music Series, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s Community Series: Harmony Potpourri will be held on 23 July 2016 (Saturday), 7pm at the multi-purpose court in front of Blk 838 Yishun Street 81 (opposite Khatib MRT). This concert is supported by the Nee Soon South Citizens’ Consultative Committee’s Community Arts and Culture Club, and will be conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong. Grassroots Advisor and MP for Nee Soon GRC, Dr Lee Bee Wah, will join 1,500 residents in the celebration of music and community bonding. Admission is free.
This concert, in line with the title, promotes various forms of harmony between people from all walks of life and will commence with Overture 2004, a piece that illustrates harmony and prosperity of a nation. The concert will also showcase Singapore’s multiracial vibrancy through pieces including local Indian community song Singai Naadu, Malay Folksong Duo and medley from Beatles’ songs in Beatles Forever which includes Hey Jude, Yesterday, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Ob-la-di, Oba-la-da and Let It Be.
One of SCO’s couple musicians – cello principal Xu Zhong and liuqin musician Zhang Li – will perform a romantic piece together titled The Roof. This piece is the instrumental version of the Chinese song of the same title made famous by Jacky Wu and Landy Wen. The love and mutual understanding between them will bring out the flavour of this piece.
From fellow colleagues of over 30 years to good friends, dizi musicians Phang Thean Siong and Lim Sin Yeo will perform The Good News, an adaptation of Henan opera piece that portrays the joy of people upon receiving good news. This joyful piece describes the happy and harmonious working relationship between people.
Melodic Potpourri includes ten familiar tunes from all over the world such as Greensleeves, Rhapsody in Blue, Sakura, Jasmine, Farandole, Aquarela, The Blue Danube, O Sole Mio, Chan Mali Chan and Singapura. The piece showcases international and societal harmony among countries and their citizens.
SCO Community Series performs at heartlands, bringing a series great music to the neighbourhood.
