Singapore, 29 June 2016 (Wednesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) Music Oasis concert series returns to the Singapore Botanic Gardens to celebrate national day. Titled A Nation Celebrates, this concert will be held on 6 August 2016 (Saturday), 6pm at the Singapore Botanic Gardens Gardens Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage. Admission is free.
SCO Assistant Conductor Moses Gay will conduct SCO a concert programme, through four segments, to illustrate the journey of Singapore’s journey to independence. The prelude will feature Wang Chenwei’s Confluence, a piece that incorporates music styles from the four races in Singapore. This composition illustrates the multi-racial groups in Singapore being united and working towards a common vision.
The second part, which illustrates the founding of Singapore, will feature Eric Watsons’s composition, An Independent Note. The piece carries an excerpt of our founding prime minister’s speech during Singapore’s Independence Day, which will be narrated by Jonathan Charles Tay. This piece portrays the hardships and obstacles that Singapore experienced and overcame to become the developed and prosperous country it is today.
The third part, which illustrates the development of Singapore, will feature Law Wai Lun’s rearranged Medley of Television Drama Theme Songs, which includes nostalgic theme songs from popular Singapore television dramas such as Strive (from The Awakening), Good Morning, Sir! (from Good Morning, Sir!), Kopi-O (from the Coffee Shop) and I Can Endure the Hardship (from Stepping Out). The concert will also feature Medley of National Day Songs which includes heart-warming National Day theme songs which include We Are Singapore, One United People and Home. The finale piece, The Forge Ahead, composed by Phoon Yew Tien, encourages Singaporeans to work towards a better and more prosperous Singapore.
