Singapore, 12 August 2016 (Friday) – Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) and China Cultural Centre (CCC) present A Moment We Share – Moonlight Charms as part of mid-autumn festival celebrations. The concert will be held on 11 September 2016 (Sunday) with 2 performances at 3pm and 5pm respectively at the China Cultural Centre Theatre. Admission is free with ticketed admission.

SYCO conductor Moses Gay will conduct the SYCO ensembles to perform a selection of mid-autumn-themed repertoire such as Lu Wen Cheng’s Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake. Inspired by the sceneries in Hangzhou during the mid-autumn festival, the piece was composed to express the grandeur of West Lake. Yeo Puay Hian’s arrangement of Rousing Clouds Chasing the Moon portrays the breathtaking night view of the bright moon emerging from the clouds.

SYCO pipa principal Kua Hui Lin and guzheng musician Jerica Fung will perform Qiu Da Cheng’s re-arrangement of pipa and guzheng duet Spring Blossoms on a Moonlit Night by the Riverbank. The blend of the two instruments adds a poetic nature to the piece which portrays the view of the setting sun on the bell tower by the riverbank as boats return from their sailing trip. It also expresses the composer’s love for the nature.

This concert will also feature compositions for bowed-string instruments including Three Taiwanese Folk Tunes, arranged by local composer Law Wai Lun. This lively and simple piece describes the joy of the farms as they see the train entering the mountains and tunnels in the Yi Lan region in Taiwan. Showcasing the various techniques of the strings, Lo Leung Fai’s Strings Sentiments showcases the different techniques of the strings, including plucking, legato, staccato and the melodic nature of the instrument.

Arranged by Chuan Joon Hee, The Full Moon is a touching piece that depicts the homesickness of solders when they are sent to the border to defend their country. Chen Jia Ming’s Moonlight in the City will let the audience relive the scenes of the popular local drama Toufu Street. SYCO will perform Full Moon Blossoms, composed by Huang Yi Jun and arranged by Peng Xiu Wen as a finale piece. This joyous piece illustrates the beauty of life with flowers blooming and just like the full moon; people should strive to live their life to the fullest.
