Singapore, 17 August 2016 (Wednesday) – As part of Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s (SCO) ongoing initiative to promote arts development in Singapore, SCO collaborates with students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) to present SCO-NAFA Campus RhapsodyNanyang Impressions. This concert will be conducted by SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong and will be held on 21 September 2016 (Wednesday), 7.30pm at the Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3. Admission is free with ticket registration.

Through this concert, SCO hopes to showcase our unique Nanyang music and inspire audience to appreciate these compositions. Hence, SCO will perform pieces such as Wang Chenwei’s Confluence, which was inspired by the vibrancy and harmony of Singapore’s multi-racial society. This composition blends Indian and Malay music with western compositional techniques. This piece portrays the confluence of cultures in Singapore and encapsulates the spirit of mutual understanding among the four major races in Singapore.

Zhou Jun An’s Colours of Rain depicts the different scenery of rain in the tropical climate of Southeast Asia. SCO will perform the Third Movement: Yin which utilises intense percussion and fast tempo to portray a heavy storm. It also expresses the fighting spirit of our ancestors when they first set foot in Nanyang and braving hardships to make a better life. The Fourth Movement: Ni represents rainbow and it depicts the scenery after rain. The soft grains of music are used to portray the dripping of water droplets from leaves which also signifies a new beginning.

NAFA students will perform local composer Phoon Yew Tien’s Malay Folk Songs Divertimento and Law Wai Lun’s A Walk in the Rain. This piece was inspired from Hakka piece Luo Shui Tian’s melody and it depicts the different types of rain – drizzle, thunderstorm, East Asia monsoon and heavy downpour.

Audience can enjoy SCO and NAFA Chinese Chamber Ensemble’s joint performance of Jiang Ying’s Hot Melody from Southeast Asia, which was one of the shortlisted compositions in the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) 2006. This piece has an off-beat rhythmic pattern and displays characteristics of Southeast Asian culture. Simon Kong Su Leong’s Izpirazione II, which was awarded the second prize of Composition Award in SICCOC 2006, uses three tropical fruits as the thematic material and allows the audience to experience the different characteristics ascribed to the different fruits by the composer.
