Singapore, 22 September 2016 (Thursday) – Sponsored by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Gift of Music Series, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) presents Community Series – Classics Metamorphosis: The General’s Command. The concert will be held on 8 October 2016 (Saturday), 6pm at SCO Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Classics Metamorphosis is a new series of concerts which aims to introduce evergreen and classic Chinese orchestra repertoire and raise the level of appreciation for Chinese orchestral pieces to the audience. Every series of Classics Metamorphosis concert will  showcase a Chinese orchestra piece and how the style and flavour of this piece changes and sound like with different composers, arrangements and with the evolvement of times. This debut concert will feature renowned ancient tune, The General’s Command. This piece originates from the Tang Dynasty with a history of almost a thousand years. With numerous different scores and arrangements, the piece retains the essence of portraying the dignified and imposing aura of soldiers when they march to the battlefield.

Under the baton of SCO Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, audience can enjoy Peng Xiu Wen’s arrangement of The General’s Command which portrays more force and vigour compared to the ancient tune. This is followed by Sunan (South of Jiangsu) wind and percussion folk tune interpretation of this piece which displays a bigger contrast in speed, greater dynamics and richer tonality.

SCO yangqin musician Ma Huan will present Xiang Zuhua arrangement of Sichuan yangqin tune, The General’s Command. This piece is divided into 4 parts: Rubato, Adagio, Allergro and Presto.

Audience will also get to hear popular Chinese pop band, Mayday’s Your Legend and Chinese pop singer Kenji Wu’s A General Order. Both songs will be performed by local vocal band, MICappella’s vocalist Juni Goh. SCO will also perform acclaimed composer Gu Guan Ren’s re-arrangement of The General’s Command.

SCO will perform Huang Fei Hong’s theme song, A Man Should Stand Strong, re-arranged by Yeo Puay Hian as the finale piece. This piece was re-arranged by Hong Kong composer Wong Jum Sum James from ancient tune The General’s Command.
