Singapore, 18 October 2016 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s annual popular Young People’s Concert will be back this November! Conducted by SCO’s Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong, the concert will also feature actors from Mandarin theatre arts company – Young People’s Performing Arts Ensemble (YPPAE). Young People’s Concert – A Day Lost in Pulau Ubin will be held on 11 November 2016 (Friday), 10.30am and 12 November 2016 (Saturday), 2.30pm and 5pm at the SCO Concert Hall. This concert will be supported by an exhibition showcasing the rich biodiversity on Pulau Ubin by the National Parks Board (NParks), as part of the Community in Nature initiative (CIN).
This concert was inspired based on SCO’s first family-themed concert in 2008 titled “Musical Adventure of Ah Boy – A Day Lost in Jungle”. As SCO celebrates its 20thyear this year, SCO improvises from its first family-themed concert to present A Day Lost in Pulau Ubin this November. Through Chinese orchestra and theatre, this concert aims to introduce the beauty of Pulau Ubin, create awareness of protecting Pulau Ubin’s rich biodiversity and to create interest to young audience to visit Singapore’s green spaces. In the concert, the young actors from the Young People’s Performing Arts Ensemble will take on the role of the main character, Ah Boy and a talking scarecrow to enact Ah Boy’s discoveries as he explores Pulau Ubin.
SCO has commissioned young Singaporean composer, Benjamin Lim, to compose a new piece titled Wonders of Pulau Ubin, which will feature the wildlife of Pulau Ubin. YPPAE’s Artistic Director, Ma Gyap Sen’s composition Experience Pulau Ubin will showcase the deep connection between nature and music. SCO will also perform Happy Wanderer, Burung Kakak Tu, Excerpts from The Insect World, Flight of Bumble Bee, Nutcracker Suite and Hundreds of Birds Adoring a Phoenix.This concert is suitable for family enjoyment and will be conducted in Mandarin.
Young People’s Performing Arts Ensemble (YPPAE) is a Mandarin theatre performing arts company by the young, for the young. They are dedicated to research, develop and practise Mandarin theatre performing arts and arts education alongside with the young. Led by board of directors and artistic director – Ms. Ma Gyap Sen, YPPAE produces “box office hits” Mandarin children theatre productions – ranging from plays and cross-talk shows to choral concerts and musicals – every year. YPPAE seeks not only to provide theatre works of profound aesthetic and educational value through our performances, but to achieve their educational objectives of enhancing every child’s confidence and developing his or her sense of identity through creative drama.
