Singapore, 28 October 2016 (Friday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) celebrates its 20th anniversary with a multi-media exhibition titled “SCO Igniting 20 Years of Rhythmic Passion”. This exhibition, along with other events, aims to highlight and celebrate SCO’s development over the past two decades.
“SCO Igniting 20 Years of Rhythmic Passion” exhibition will be held from 4 November – 11 December 2016 at the Singapore Conference Hall. The exhibition illuminates milestones significant to how SCO becomes what it is today. From humble early beginnings of a cultural orchestra to establishing its unique identity through incorporating Southeast Asian cultural elements in its music, SCO is fast establishing itself in Singapore and internationally, and is today, an international orchestra.
The multimedia exhibition is segmented into three distinct movements — SCO’s Sound Foundation, Meet The Finest Minds of SCO and Inspiring The Masses — through pictures and videos. The three movement format of the exhibition replicates that of a music score.
The first movement: Our Sound Foundation, will showcase ten significant milestones of SCO, which include the establishment of SCO under the initiative of then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, SCO’s inaugural concert, international concert tours, launch of Friends of SCO and Hua Yue newsletter, moving into the Singapore Conference Hall, appointment of Music Director, Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra inaugural concert, launching of the SCO International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition, creating two Guinness World Records and launching world’s first digital online concert hall for Chinese orchestra.
In the second movement: Meet The Finest Minds, visitors will get to hear from ten selected personalities who have contributed to the development of SCO. They are Professor Tommy Koh, Mr Benson Puah, Mr Chew Keng Juea (honorary chairman of SCO), Mr Patrick Lee (Chairman of SCO), Maestro Tsung Yeh (Music Director of SCO), Mr Quek Ling Kiong (Resident Conductor of SCO), Mr Choo Thiam Siew (CEO of Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre), Mr Eric James Watson (composer-in-residence of SCO), Mr Ling Hock Siang (Erhu Associate Principal of SCO) and Mr Cheow Xunqi, (former SYCO concertmaster).
In the last movement: Inspiring the Masses, a recollection of significant concerts will be categorised into five segments, Tug At Heartstrings, Starry Concerto, Cultural Confluence, Classic & Grandeur and Ode To The Red Dot, and reviewed through past concert recordings.
During the exhibition, visitors are able to view the larger-than-life versions of Chinese instruments and exquisite instruments at the Mega Instruments Exhibit and Exquisite Instruments Exhibit areas. There will also be instrumental workshops and weekend arts market to complement the exhibition.
