Singapore, 11 January 2017 (Wednesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) returns to Our Tampines Hub to perform to the Tampines community during the Chinese New Year festive season. The concert will be conducted by Resident Conductor Quek Ling Kiong and will be held on 4 February 2017 (Saturday), 6pm at Our Tampines Hub Community Auditorium, Level 3. Admission is free.
SCO will specially perform festive tunes and songs related to the spring season to usher in Chinese New Year. Lo Leong Fei’s Spring which describes the flourishing spring season will kickstart the concert. Audience can join in the sing-along of familiar Chinese New Year favourites including Mao Yuan’s A Joyous New Year with solo performance by SCO cello musician Tang Jia, a rearrangement of Chinese New Year hits by local composer Law Wai Lun in Celebrating the New Year and Sim Boon Yew’s arrangement of Suite of Spring with vocal performance by 88.3JIA FM DJ Jia Ming.
The concert will also educate audience by featuring tunes from different races to introduce music from different races to the audience. Wang Chenwei’s Singai Naaduwhich means Singapore, My Country is a Tamil National Day Parade song. Orkestra Sri Temasek, a Malay orchestra based in Tampines West CC will perform two pieces together with SCO. The first piece will be Yeo Puay Hian’s The Orchid Paradise, a composition with indian music element. For this piece, SCO dizi musician Tan Chye Tiong will perform on the indian flute and SCO percussion musician Xu Fan who will play the tabla. This is followed by the rendition of local composer Lai Wai Lun’s Malay Nursery Rhymes by Orkestra Sri Temasek on Malay drums together with SCO’s dizi musician Yin Zhi Yang, Lim Sin Yeo, Zeng Zhi, Phang Thean Siong, Tan Chye Tiong. This piece is a compilation of all the familiar malay nursery rhymes and will stir up memories of childhood among the audience.
