Singapore, 4 May 2017 (Thursday) – Renowned dizi master Zhang Wei Liang returns to perform with Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO). Under the baton of Music Director Tsung Yeh, they will perform well-known dizi pieces composed by renowned composers such as Zhao Ji Ping, Qigang Chen, Zhao Song Ting and Zhang Wei Liang himself.. The one-night concert titled Dreams of Homeland will be held on 21 May 2017 (Sunday), 8pm at the Victoria Concert Hall.
The concert will begin with Zhao Ji Ping’s nostalgic Thoughts of Homeland. This orchestra piece will illustrate emotions of homesickness. Following which, Zhang Wei Liang will perform his self-composed work Tears of Flowers. This piece has been awarded the outstanding award in the Instrumental Music Works Competition 2010 by the China Culture Department. It is composed based on the tunes of Suzhou pingtan and conveys the deep feelings of Lin Daiyu (林黛玉), the main protagonist in Dreams of the Red Chamber (红楼梦), a classical Chinese novel.
Zhang Wei Liang is a famous dizi, xiao, and xun performer. He is also a composer and the Professor of China Conservatory of Music. Widely known as the “King of Dizi,” Zhang Wei Liang has published multiple solo music CDs. As a solo performer, Zhang Wei Liang attained numerous performances and composition awards in China as well as overseas. Look forward to this upcoming concert as he showcases his virtuosity in the piece, The Spring Orchid. Composed by the late dizi maestro, Zhao Song Ting, this piece portrays the noble quality of an orchid. This performance is Zhang’s dedication to the loving memory of his late mentor.
Zhang Wei Liang will also be performing his own composed double dizi concerto, Dreams of Homeland with his student, SCO dizi musician Zeng Zhi. A graduate of the China Conservatory of Music, Zeng Zhi mastered the dizi, xiao, hulusi, bawu and other wind instruments. He has played at the National Grand Theatre, Beijing Concert Hall, the Beijing Poly Theater and the Forbidden City Concert Hall. In 2008, Zeng joined SCO as a dizi musician and subsequently held a solo concert at the Esplanade. Dreams of Homeland consists of four movements, each containing a graceful allure.
SCO will also perform Qigang Chen’s San Xiao, which will be performed in a quartet format, as well as the world premiere of Cui Quan’s dizi and orchestra piece Southern Wind!
