Singapore, 9 May 2017 (Tuesday) – Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s annual Young Children’s Concert returns this mid-year school holiday with resident conductor Quek Ling Kiong, as Professor Quek, enacting how music and weather are interrelated through Chinese orchestra instruments and music. SCO Young Children’s Concert – The Little Adventurer of SCO: Listen to the Musical Weather Forecast will be held on 27 May 2017 (Saturday), 5pm at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
In this concert, children will take on the role of little adventurers and explore the close “friendship” between music and the weather through music articulations such as staccato, legato, glissando, tremolo, trill, pizzicato and more! The concert will perform the world premiere of Tan Kah Yong’s Discover The Magic of Music 3, Spring in the Pamirs and Melodies of Spring arranged by Sim Boon Yew, traditional folk songs Three Taiwanese Folk Tunes: Tian Hei Hei and Three Sichuan Folk Songs: Tai Yang Chu Lai Xi Yang Yang which are arranged by Law Wai Lun and composed by Gu Guan Ren respectively, classic Chinese orchestra piece Fishermen’s Song of the Eastern Seas which is composed by Gu Guan Ren and Ma Sheng Long, Against Typhoon arranged by Liu Bin, familiar pieces like Rhythm of the Rain, composed by John Gummoe and arranged by Phang Kok Jun; Thunder and Lightning Polka, composed by Johann Strauss II and arranged by Gu Guan Ren; Prince Sang Nila Utama and Singa, composed by Law Wai Lun, as well as the world premiere of Liong Kit Yeng’s The Weather Songs.
Children can also join in the fringe activity at the concert hall foyer from 4pm to learn how to make ocean drums out of everyday items and use their self-made ocean drums during the concert! Join Professor Quek on this fun music journey and see how music instruments tell the weather forecast. This concert is held in conjunction with Children’s Season Singapore. Children’s Season Singapore is jointly presented by the National Heritage Board and the Museum Roundtable.
