Singapore, 13 May 2017 (Saturday) – Highly-acclaimed erhu musician George Gao and pipa musician Zhao Cong will collaborate with Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) this June. Along with Music Director Tsung Yeh, they will perform pieces containing traditional and contemporary elements. Dazzling Musicality will be held on 2 and 3 June 2017 (Friday and Saturday), 8pm at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium.
Hailed as one of the most innovative and respected erhu performers today, George Gao is also a Gemini Award nominated erhu player who incorporates jazz, rock, Middle-Eastern, and Indian music elements into his performances, giving traditional erhu music a new-age spin. George Gao’s first performance with SCO was in 2012, and he returns to collaborate with the orchestra this year, with pieces such as Ma Sheng Long’s rearrangement of A Stalk of Flower, as well as his original compositions Erhu Capriccio No. 5 – Nakhi (on 2 June) and No. 3 – Dazzlement (on 3 June).
Zhao Cong is one of China’s uprising pipa musicians. She performed at the G20 Summit in Hangzhou in 2016, and has also won multiple awards such as the Gold Award at the San Jose International World Music Competition. This will be her first performance with SCO performing her composition, Apsaras on the Silk Road (2 June), which was awarded the Grand Prix at the first China National Arts Fund awards. She will also perform Jiang Ying’s Taiji (3 June), a rearrangement of Bloomingoriginally by Ma Jiuyue, and Wang Huiran’s Dance of the Yi People, a piece that combines the spirit of the folk tradition and mastery of the pipa technique.
The two-night concert will also present talented young composer Chow Jun Yi’s Kampung Spirit, an orchestral piece which incorporates gamelan elements into Chinese instrumental music, and was the second prize winner at the 2010 Taipei Chinese Orchestra International Composition Competition. SCO will also perform Liu Xing’s Invisible Sword and Liu Chang Yuan’s Memories.
